KUALA LUMPUR: Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu was impressed by the high demand for Malaysian Musang King in Shenzen, so much so they are going for RM350 a fruit.

He said that during his recent visit to the country, within a few hours the fresh durians were sold out after taking two hours to be distributed to the sales outlets around the city.

Mohamad also said he was informed that the importer from China was currently studying the possibility of bringing other types of durian to the country's market.

"Let us all pray that in the future, durian kampung will also receive high demand here so that all durian farmers can benefit from this effort," he said in a Facebook post.

During his working trip to Shenzen, Mohamad visited the fresh durian packaging and distribution warehouse operated by Joy Ming Mau in Shenzhen, followed by a tour of Sam's Club and Ole Supermarket.

On Tuesday, it was reported that the ministry was actively engaging in discussions with companies and China's General Administration of Customs, to export fresh durian kampung to the country.

Mohamad had said if the discussions are approved, durian kampung was expected to be marketed in China during the next durian season, with the relevant agencies in his ministry playing a role in gathering the supply.

Previously, the media reported that Malaysia's first fresh durians to China began selling at select retail outlets in six provinces: Beijing, Zhengzhou, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Nanning.
