KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government should adopt a progressive strategy that promotes balanced development across urban and rural areas, says National Consumer Foundation's Sabah chairman David Chan.

Chan called on the state government to establish a new benchmark in economic development so that every Sabahan benefits from the state's resources regardless of where they live.

“Sabah has immense potential to build a balanced and prosperous economy. However, this requires bold and decisive action to ensure that economic growth reaches even the most remote communities, not just urban centres,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Sept 1).

Chan added that by prioritising balanced development, the state government could uplift the standard of living across Sabah and secure long-term stability and prosperity for all Sabahans.

“We can look to Sarawak as an example of what focused leadership and thoughtful planning can achieve,” he said.

He added that Sarawak Premier Datuk Sri Abang Johari Openg has demonstrated a visionary approach to economic development by strategically utilising state funds to benefit all sectors of society, particularly in rural areas.

This model of inclusive growth has ensured that economic opportunities are distributed across the entire state.

“While Sarawak's achievements are commendable, they also serve as a call to action for Sabah. By learning from Sarawak’s example, we can work towards a future where every Sabahan has the opportunity to thrive,” Chan said.
