THE Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) has called for accountability, transparency, and justice in cases of enforced disappearances, particularly focussing on the cases of Pastor Raymond Koh, Amri Che Mat, Joshua Helmi, and Ruth Sitepu.

SUHAKAM noted the importance of releasing the findings from a task force established in 2019 to investigate these disappearances, highlighting the distress caused by the lack of transparency.

It also urged the government to sign the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.

“We strongly believe that public access to the findings of this investigation is essential not only for the purpose of compliance with the principle of transparency but also to achieving justice, fostering public trust, and enabling healing for those affected,” SUHAKAM said in a statement marking International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances.

“The families of Joshua and Ruth, like those of Pastor Raymond Koh and Amri Che Mat, continue to live in anguish and uncertainty.”

Moreover, SUHAKAM also stressed the need for investigations to be thorough, independent, and impartial, adhering to international standards, and approached under the presumption that the individuals are still alive.

The commission linked the disappearances of these individuals and expressed concern for the families affected, urging a comprehensive strategy to address such cases. - Sept 1, 2024
