KUALA LUMPUR: The People's Progressive Party (MyPPP) might face resistance from MIC in its bid to rejoin Barisan Nasional, said an analyst.

Nusantara Academy of Strategic Research senior fellow Professor Dr Azmi Hassan said MIC might reject the idea of MyPPP rejoining the coalition.

Azmi said BN would welcome back MyPPP because MIC's influence among Indian voters had been weakening.

"It is a good move," he said.

Today, MyPPP appealed to rejoin BN.

BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he would raise the matter with BN's leadership, adding that MyPPP had never officially left the coalition.

Azmi said MyPPP had strong grassroots support and was in a better position than MIC to get support from the Indian community.

Political analyst Dr Noor Nirwandy Mat Noordin said BN's decision on whether to approve MyPPP would depend on its goal for the general election.

Nirwandy, from Universiti Teknologi Mara School of Media and Information Warfare Studies' Security, said it was important for parties to understand voting patterns.

He added that MyPPP had to do its homework to understand the Indian community and to gain the trust of voters.

In 2018, MyPPP announced its decision to leave BN to become an independent party.

This was announced by former president Tan Sri M. Kayveas when the party was in the middle of an internal conflict.
