IF there is anything KLCC LRT commuters can look forward to on their way to starting a busy, hectic day in the office, it is the smell of fresh coffee buns wafting out from the Rotiboy stall at the entrance.

But now, the landmark bakery and the distinctive scent of coffee buns will remain only as sweet memories.

According to a recent post on X by BFM News, the iconic outlet in KLCC, which is the oldest branch in Malaysia, will be permanently closed.

Many netizens took to cyberspace, lamenting the news while reminiscing about the fond memories they had with Rotiboy.

For those not in the know, Rotiboy is famed for its coffee-encrusted bun with salted butter for its fillings.

Oftentimes compared with a mexican bun which comes with savory fillings, the recipe of Rotiboy’s signature bun, however, was a twist from the founder Hiro Tan’s sister.

Founded in 1988 in Penang, the naming of the bakery was unplanned. Apparently, Tan’s brother called his nephew a naughty boy but it sounded like roti boy, hence the name.

On August 29, Rotiboy shared a social media update announcing that their outlet would be closing after September 8. They also expressed gratitude to their customers for 21 years of support.

But it would seem that the closure in KLCC does not mean that Malaysians would not be able to enjoy these lovable buns anymore.

According to netizen Zee Em, Rotiboy already had their eyes on Sabah.

New Straits Time added that Rotiboy has opened another store recently at the Elmina Mall. Kudos to Rotiboy for the new opening.

But what is the reason behind the closure of such a historic branch in KLCC?

One netizen said that the astronomical cost of rental could be a reason why Rotiboy decided to move elsewhere.

Netizen Apekelan suggested that Rotiboy emulate Auntie Anne by reducing the size of their bakery instead to counter the rising cost of rental. He said business can be conducted below the escalator, with food on the go and no dine in.

Lastly, Haziq’s comment sums up the sentiment of the majority.

We are equally in agreement with Haziq on this one. The closure of a business, especially one that brings much joy to us all is indeed a cause for sadness.

But at least we can find consolation in the fact that the fluffy, fragrant coffee buns can still be found, but elsewhere across Malaysia. - Sept 2, 2024
