SEOUL: Local military industry players have been urged to spearhead the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in the sector to keep pace with rapid technological advancements.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said AI technology is increasingly being applied in military fields.

"I believe local industry players have the capability to pioneer AI technology in the military sector, thus allowing the Malaysia Armed Forces (MAF) to utilise it.

"We have local companies involved in AI development that can be applied in the commercial sector," he told reporters here Tuesday (Sept 10) after attending the Responsible AI in the Military Domain (REAIM) Summit 2024.

Khaled added that local industry players with ideas for AI development can present them to his ministry for potential use by the MAF, thereby making use of locally-developed technology in the military sector.

REAIM 2024 is jointly organised by South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defence, along with co-organisers including the Netherlands, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

Malaysia is among 90 countries participating in the summit. – Bernama
