HUMAN rights activist and lawyer Siti Kasim has slammed Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) chief activist Datuk Nadzim Johan a.k.a. Toqqi and convert Muslim preacher Mohd Ridhuan Tee Abdullah for belittling efforts by the Malaysian authorities to clamp down on the wrongdoings by business subsidiaries linked to the Global Ikhwan Group.
Ridhuan has among others ticked off mainstream media for “amplifying one or two cases” of sodomy cases which Global Ikhwan Group executive chairman CEO Datuk Nasiruddin Mohd Ali admitted to having occurred at welfare homes linked to its subsidiary, Global Ikhwan Service and Business Holding (GISBH).
The Muafakat Nasional deputy president further expressed concern over the impact of such adverse publicity to the image of Islam, alluding to the fact that sodomy incidences have also occurred in churches where the perpetrators are priests.
“Both of you must be out of your mind that this is an isolated matter … more than 400 kids were rescued (from 20 so-called welfare homes) with revelation of child abuse and other offences by old timers at GISB (holding company Global Ikhwan Sdn Bhd),” she berated in a recent Facebook video.
“How can this be a small matter just because GISB is said to be successful in their wide-ranging businesses while enslaving children, not paying their wages or even using the children to solicit donations?
“Be shameful, please … even if sodomy cases happen in churches or in MCA which I myself haven’t heard of, does this mean it’s fine to accept or sweep such incidences under the carpet in the name of preventing disgrace to Islam?”
In fact, Siti Kasim is not alone in lambasting especially Ridhuan as many netizens, too, have similarly expressed disgust at the 58-year-old opposition-slant academician.
“Actually, it’s you guys who brought shame to Islam,” Siti Kasim hit out as she took a pot shot at PAS president Tan Sri Hadi Awang for insinuating that the action against GISB is “an attack on Islam” when asked to comment on the matter by journalists.
“OMG, my mind is blown away by these so-called defenders of Islam for it’s them who brought embarrassment to Islam or who truly tarnish the image of Islam.
“You think the public is dumb or what? You can make a fool out of your followers but not the society as a whole … people like you guys are pissing me off with your nature of comments.”.
The Orang Asli advocate also slammed UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh for having “vanished”.
“Why not call for boycott of shops linked to Global Ikhwan Group” Why not you jump up (like what he did in the KK Super Mart sock-gate saga)?” Siti Kasim challenged the Merlimau state assemblyman.
“Something is seriously wrong in this country … are we going to allow these people to continue with their vitriol, rubbish in defending the biggest and worst type of sexual abuse in Malaysia? I’m unable to describe how terrible sodomy is and yet they tell us to hush-hush on the matter.” - Sept 19, 2024

Penal Code (Act 574): Sodomy is criminalized under Section 377A and 377B of the Penal Code, which addresses carnal intercourse against the order of nature. Engaging in sodomy, whether consensual or not, is a punishable offense with imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping. If sodomy involves a minor (under 18 years old), it would be considered statutory rape, as minors cannot legally consent to sexual activities. The penalties are harsher when it involves children.
Section 201 of the Penal Code: This section covers the concealment of an offense. Any individual who, knowing that an offense such as sodomy has been committed, hides evidence or fails to disclose it to the authorities can face punishment, including imprisonment of up to 7 years, or fines, or both

The issues of societal polarization, Islamophobia, and ethnic tensions in Malaysia are intricately linked to the economic struggles faced by the general public. Rising costs of living, income inequality, and financial instability create widespread frustration, which in turn amplifies existing divisions within society. These challenges fuel sentiments of resentment and discontent, leading to heightened tensions between ethnic and religious communities. Economic hardships also provide fertile ground for the spread of Islamophobia and other forms of prejudice, as vulnerable groups become scapegoats for broader systemic issues, further straining Malaysia’s delicate social fabric and undermining national unity.

Both unemployment and job quality are crucial issues that should not be overlooked. Besides adequate wages, a conducive and supportive work environment is also necessary. Malaysia continues to face the problem of "brain drain," where many skilled workers prefer to serve in other countries. This ongoing issue indicates that job opportunities and conditions within the country may not be meeting the expectations of its workforce, prompting them to seek better prospects abroad. Addressing this requires not only creating more jobs but also enhancing the quality of employment to retain local talent and ensure sustainable development.
