PETALING JAYA: Umno will continue to strengthen its cooperation with unity government parties to ensure political stability and the well-being of the people, says Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

"The victory in the Mahkota by-election also sends a clear message that the people warmly accept the model of cooperation within the unity government," said the Umno secretary-general in a statement after the party's supreme council meeting on Monday (Oct 7).

"The meeting agreed to further strengthen cooperation and joint efforts among the component parties of the unity government as a manifestation of Umno's seriousness and commitment to ensuring political stability, the well-being of the people, and the prosperity of the nation.

"The party must also ensure that the mandate given by the people is carried out with utmost humility and integrity," he said.

"Umno also extends its thanks to the entire campaign machinery of the Malaysian Unity Government, including Barisan component parties, friends of Barisan and Pakatan Harapan, who worked tirelessly as a team to gain voters' confidence," he said.

On Sept 28, Barisan Nasional retained the Mahkota state seat when its candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah won the seat with a landslide 20,648-vote majority.

Syed Hussien received 27,995 votes against Perikatan Nasional's Mohamad Haizan Jaafar's 7,332 in a straight fight.
