KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition Chief Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin has criticised the government's positive economic declarations, pointing out that ordinary Malaysians continue to bear the brunt of the escalating cost of living.

Hamzah said that Budget 2025 did not sufficiently tackle the cost of living increases affecting citizens.

"Families are dealing with immense financial pressure. Aren't ministers, including the MP for Tambun, aware of the situation on the ground?" he said while debating the Supply Bill at the Policy Stage on Monday (Oct 21).

"People look to the budget with the hope of reduced living expenses and improvements in job quality, the economy, education, healthcare, plus access to affordable housing and sound infrastructure," added Hamzah.

He further commented that the government's pride in the 1.9% inflation rate is misplaced given the living cost challenges faced by many.

Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (Perikatan-Rantau Panjang) interjected, highlighting a tragic incident in Muar, Johor, where starvation led to fatalities within a family.

"A woman was discovered malnourished alongside her deceased father and disabled brother. We can't allow Malaysians to perish from starvation. It's an atrocity," said Siti Zailah.

Hamzah then said that celebrating economic achievements is meaningless if Malaysians are suffering, and added that the government consider additional aid for those in need.

He then said that Perikatan MPs would support such measures.

"Assistance should be provided impartially, without considering race, religion, or political allegiance," he added.

On Aug 24, a man and his disabled son were found dead in their Muar home, while a woman was found in a weakened state due to malnutrition.
