KUALA LUMPUR: A security guard has been detained in connection with distributing fake letters bearing the name of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusoff.

The letters were sent to several individuals in Sarawak.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain stated that the 32-year-old man was arrested by Sarawak police in Samarahan, Sarawak on Saturday (Nov 16).

"The arrest followed a report lodged by a man who claimed to have received a job offer from the suspect.

"The job was supposedly for an office secretary position at the Deputy Prime Minister's Office," he said when contacted on Sunday (Nov 17).

The Inspector-General of Police mentioned that the complainant had met the suspect in July and that the suspect convinced him he was Fadillah’s security escort.

"The complainant felt assured by the offer and handed over all personal documents. The suspect then provided a letter of appointment as an office secretary and an application for government quarters," Razarudin said.

Checks revealed the letters were counterfeit.

"The complainant lodged a police report fearing his personal documents might be misused.

"Sarawak police detained the suspect at 12.45pm on Saturday at the Samarahan district office. Two mobile phones were also seized," he said.

Investigations showed the suspect had been working at the Samarahan district office since 2018.

"The complainant was not the only person he offered jobs in the Federal Government to. He also made job offers to several individuals, including friends, since late October.

"The suspect admitted the job offers were fake. He claimed to have done so to gain attention from his friends," Razarudin explained.

Razarudin stated the suspect also claimed he had not misused any personal information provided to him, nor had he received any monetary reward.

"The suspect enjoyed the attention from friends who saw him as an important figure.

"He also stated he had destroyed the fake offer letters using a shredder," he added.

Checks on the suspect's mobile phone revealed conversations between him and the complainant.
