PETALING JAYA: Operators of food and beverage premises in Kelantan will be required to obtain Malaysian halal certification before they can renew their business licences, says a state exco member.

Kelantan Islamic development, dakwah, information and regional relations committee chairman Mohd Asri Mat Daud said the Kota Baru Municipal Council will be the first local authority to enforce this requirement.

“This requirement will be implemented at other districts in the near future,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia yesterday.

Mohd Asri said 453 such certificates have been issued to businesses in the state from January until now. The businesses comprised hotels, restaurants, eateries and pharmacies, he added.

Of the 453 certificates, 405 were issued to bumiputra-run businesses while 48 were issued to non- Muslim business operators, he said.

Mohd Asri said business operators should adhere to eight conditions before they can be issued with the halal certification.

“It is not just about the type of food and beverages, but the requirement covers the kitchen and use of halal materials or products as well,” he added.

He said inspections, including surprise checks, will be conducted by the relevant authorities to ensure compliance by the businesses.

The authorities include the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim), the Health Ministry and the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, he added.

Mohd Asri said that surprise inspections will be conducted throughout the year to ensure compliance with the regulations.

He added that data shows Kota Baru has the highest number of halal-certified premises, with 190 businesses. The other districts have about six to seven premises each which are certified.
