Dato' Ting graduated from University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree Hons in 1982. Upon graduation, he went to England to read law at the University of Essex. He obtained his Bachelor of Law (Hons) in 1985 and was admitted as a barrister by Lincoln's Inn, London in 1986. He was called to the Malaysian Bar in 1987.

Dato' Ting has been in legal practice as advocate and solicitor in the legal firm Amin-Tan & Co. from October 1987 until May 2007. Since 1 June 2007, Dato' Ting is a partner of Joseph Ting & Co.
