Dato' Abdul Mutalib started his career in investment and commercial banking and he was the Vice President, Investment Banking at Chase Manhattan Bank from 1994 to 2000. He then moved into the public sector and served various Ministries including the Ministry of Works, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Internal Trade and Consumer Affairs from 2000 to 2011, before being appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia or PR1MA.
Dato' Abdul Mutalib was on the board of Bank Rakyat, member of MARA Council and the Non-Independent Non-Executive Chairman of Bintulu Ports Holding Berhad.
