Gold prices have surged, reaching $2430 per troy ounce on Tuesday, flirting with historic highs. The recent spike in gold prices is largely attributed to comments made by Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, which have bolstered expectations of an impending interest rate cut.

US tariff hike on Chinese products may augur well for Malaysian glovemakers

With the hike in US tariffs on Chinese rubber medical and surgical gloves from 7.5% to 25% in 2026, Malaysian glove exporters will be able to compete as Chinese gloves will be more expensive in about two years compared to now.

Virus experts warn the mutated 'Centaurus' BA.2.75 variant has arrived in Australia and could take over from Omicron after ripping through India

The 'Centaurus' sub-variant, officially named BA.2.75, has spread through India
BA.2.75 has already been detected in Australia, as well as several other countries
Virologists fear the sub-variant could fuel a new wave of cases around the world

BA.2.75 sub-variant is able to evade antibodies elicited either by vaccine protection or prior infections with Omicron BA.1 and BA.2 and the WHO is monitoring cases

A new Covid sub-variant nicknamed Centaurus has made its way to Australia after ripping through India as health experts fear a similar situation could be on the way for us.
Officially named BA.2.75, the sub-variant is being monitored by the World Health Organisation with experts warning it could be more transmissible than Omicron.

‘Headed in a bad direction’: Omicron variant may bring second-largest US Covid wave

The BA.5 sub-variant has immuno-evasive properties that cause reinfection even after vaccination and previous illness.

The virus is evolving to evade the protection from infection offered by vaccination or recovery from previous illness with Covid and it seems to be more transmissible as well.

The immune-evasive properties of the evolving variants make new waves more likely, says Tulio de Oliveira, director of the Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation at Stellenbosch University and the lead of the Network for Genomic Surveillance in South Africa.

“BA.4 and 5 are potentially the variants that can break through immunity the easiest,” he said. They are “really capable of reinfection”.

The quickly changing coronavirus has spawned yet another super contagious omicron mutant that’s worrying scientists as it gains ground in India and pops up in numerous other countries, including the United States.

Scientists say the variant – called BA.2.75 – may be able to spread rapidly and get around immunity from vaccines and previous infection. It’s unclear whether it could cause more serious disease than other omicron variants, including the globally prominent BA.5.

‘Centaurus’: virologists express concern at new Covid subvariant

New Omicron variant BA.2.75 has been detected in India, UK, US, Australia, Germany and Canada.

Virologists have voiced concerns about the emergence of another fast-spreading Omicron variant, which is rapidly gaining ground in India and has already arrived in the UK.

The BA.2.75 variant – nicknamed “Centaurus” – was first detected in India in early May. Cases in the UK have since risen steeply – and apparently faster than those of the extremely transmissible BA.5 variant, which is also present in India, and is rapidly displacing the previously dominant BA.2 variant in many countries.

XE Variant: New COVID Strain May be More Contagious Than BA.2 Subvariant, WHO Says

The more contagious omicron subvariant BA.2 has become the dominant COVID-19 strain in the U.S., but international health experts are putting an increased focus on a new hybrid variant that may even be more infectious.

The XE variant is a recombinant, meaning it is comprised of genetic material from two other strains, which in this case are BA.1, the original strain of omicron, and BA.2, known as "stealth omicron."

According to an epidemiological update published March 29 by the World Health Organization, estimates show XE is 10% more transmissible than BA.2, however the findings require further confirmation.

There have been a total of 637 cases of XE – a recombinant of Omicron BA.1 and BA.2 – in the UK so far, according to UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

The UKHSA confirmed it had analysed three recombinants - XD and XF were recombinants of Delta and Omicron BA.1, while XE is a recombinant of Omicron BA.1 and BA.2.

The medical world is on alert yet again after a new mutant Covid-19 variant emerged in France recently.

The new strain, dubbed “variant IHU” or B. 1.640.2, was first detected in the nation last month, but is now making international headlines after catching the attention of global experts.

At least 12 cases were confirmed near the Marseilles area, and it is understood that many of those patients were hospitalised with the illness.

Variant IHU, which is believed to be linked with travel to the African nation of Cameroon, has 46 mutations which experts fear could mean it is more resistant to existing vaccines.

However, on a more positive note, the new strain does not appear to be spreading rapidly.

France detects new COVID-19 variant 'IHU', more infectious than Omicron: All we know about it

The new variant — B.1.640.2 — which has been detected in 12 patients near Marseille, contains 46 mutations, making it more resistant to vaccines and infectious

• Researchers say that it contains 46 mutations — even more than Omicron — which makes it more resistant to vaccines and infectious.
• Some 12 cases have been spotted so far near Marseille, with the first linked to travel to the African country Cameroon.
• Tests show the strain carries the N501Y mutation — first seen on the Alpha variant — that experts believe can make it more transmissible
• According to the scientists, it also carries the E484K mutation, which could mean that the IHU variant will be more resistant to vaccines.
• It is yet to be spotted in other countries or labelled a variant under investigation by the World Health Organization.

WHO warns new Covid variants could emerge that are fully resistant to vaccines as pandemic drags on

The World Health Organization warned Wednesday that new coronavirus variants could emerge during the pandemic that render the current vaccines useless.

“As this pandemic drags on, it’s possible that new variants could evade our countermeasures and become fully resistant to current vaccines or past infection, necessitating vaccine adaptations,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a press conference in Geneva.

Tedros sounded that alarm as Covid cases hit record highs in many nations, including in the U.S. The latest surge, coming more than 21 months after WHO first declared Covid a pandemic, is fueled by the spread of the new and highly transmissible omicron variant.

Reactionary political movements fostered vaccine inequity and “created the ideal conditions for the emergence of new variants,” he said.

Omicron surge is 'unlike anything we've ever seen,' expert says

An unprecedented spike in Covid-19 cases fueled by the fast-moving Omicron variant is crushing hospitals across the United States, with doctors describing packed emergency rooms as health experts implore New Year's Eve revelers to keep parties small and outdoors to help avert an even worse surge.

"It's unlike anything we've ever seen, even at the peak of the prior surges of Covid," Dr. James Phillips, who works in Washington, DC, said Wednesday, when the nation hit a new pandemic high of 300,886 average new daily cases over the prior week, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

"What we're experiencing right now is an absolute overwhelming of the emergency departments" in Washington, Phillips, chief of disaster medicine at George Washington University Hospital, told CNN's Jim Acosta.
