Datasonic – Your Move...

“Concept-turn-reality”

This sales note on Datasonic is for those who have the appetite for “concept-turn-reality” stock. For instance, MYEG which started-off in 2008 as one of these concept stocks, is now well accepted as an institutionalised counter. MYEG has been consistently trading at over 25-30x earnings multiple, and here’s why we reckon Datasonic could behave similarly.

Not something without earnings

Analysing Datasonic requires one to understand the symbiotic nature amongst its various business divisions. Datasonic's main revenue generators are MyKads, passports, consumables and card manufacturing (which they acquired recently). Collectively these contributors should make about RM95m profit per year.

Plus, other potential contracts they may be able to close this year are jobs worth about RM700m from the immigration department. We expect Datasonic to achieve net profit of RM139m or EPS of 10 sen in 2015(FE March) based on existing tenders.

Benefiting from the hyped “Petrol Subsidy Card”?

Off-late, the petrol subsidy program has been hitting headlines and widely debated.

This is what we think. We understand the government intends to implement the petrol subsidy scheme via usage of MyKad to avoid leakages and mass abuse on the system. We do not wish to speculate, but one thing is sure, the demand for MyKad will definitely increase and Datasonic will surely benefit.

To top that, we believe there should be further work scopes for Datasonic throughout the implementation process.


What valuation is right?

Since we are in the topic of “conceptual stocks”, we reckon MYEG is the closest benchmark. More than 5 years ago, investors thought that the GST program was too far-fetched for MYEG and deemed conceptual.

On hindsight, there were small group of investors who profited from believing MYEG. Given its “conceptual nature”, MYEG traded on a 5-year average PE of 25-30x.

Back to Datasonic, many view that the petrol subsidy proposal was conceptual too. Unlike the case of MYEG, we don't have to wait for many years to see if this is merely a concept given that the government is in desperate need to resolve the heavy petrol subsidy issue.

Every year, total government fuel subsidy totaled to RM25b. This petrol subsidy proposal is expected to save RM9-10b. The proposal may materialise quicker, as recent situation in Iraq may worsen, driving oil prices to higher levels.

The best case scenario for Datasonic

IF Datasonic were to have a role in the petrol subsidy scheme, we will not be surprised if investors (those who believe) may be generous enough to subscribe high PE multiples ie 25-30x to Datasonic.

Datasonic is currently trading at forward PE of 18x. At 25x PE, it could worth up to RM2.57.
