台積電在甫結束的 SEMICON 分享「矽光子」進度，並視做解決能源效率和 AI 運算兩大問題的關鍵技術後，矽光子一躍而成業界討論熱點。業界傳出台積電正與大客戶博通（Broadcom）與輝達（NVIDIA）開發基於矽光子技術的新產品，最快 2025 年進入量產。

IBM 早在 20 年前就積極投入集 20 世紀兩大最重要的發明「矽積體電路」與「半導體雷射」大成的「矽光子」技術。稱霸 CPU 市場多年的英特爾也早就投資這項技術超過 10 年，中國更視為半導體發展突圍的武器，以色列也列入國家科技發展重要項目，蘋果、NVIDIA、台積電等巨頭公司也都投入多年研發矽光子技術。

根據市調機構 Yole 的預測，矽光子市場（以裸晶計算）規模將從 2021 年 1.52 億美元，2027 年攀升至 9.27 億美元，對許多已進入發展高原期的領域而言，矽光子市場正要起飛，年複合成長率達 36%，無疑是讓業界看重並投入的一大原因。

帶動矽光子技術發展，並成為新興潛力市場的一大原因，是來自光通訊需求。延續摩爾定律越來越困難，但資料傳輸效率與運算效能需求卻仍快速增長，透過半導體製程整合光電元件，不僅能提高元件密度、增加整體操作效率、減少耗能，還能達有效降低成本效益。

「這是個革命！」投入矽光子研究領域長達 10 年的國立中山大學光電系教授洪勇智這麼看矽光子技術變革。他以過去 30 年，一般家用網路從撥接，發展至 ADSL，再到光纖為例說明科技的演進反映了各式應用驅動的頻寬和網速需求。

更何況，如今在 AI 的驅動下，各項網路應用全面開展，對於資料傳輸、儲存、運算速度已不能同日而語，科技巨擘不斷追尋更高速、更節能的技術與產品，也使得雲端運算和超大規模資料中心大規模對矽光子技術有了爆發性的需求。

以矽光子的應用領域來看，用於上述超大規模資料中心的收發器（transceivers）正是目前需求量最大的領域，以 Yole 的預估來看，2021 年的規模約為 1.48 億美元，占整體市場比重超過九成。

儘管，由資料中心需求驅動的光通訊領域，是目前矽光子應用最大市場。但矽光子能讓全球科技業巨頭紛紛投入，應用市場絕不僅止於此。

i just share what i heard during Taipei semi conductor exhibition by CEO of TSMC Mr Liu. Lisa Su frm AMD share the same concern especially AI development which will make GPU/CPU work faster and more energy consume. Silicone photonic will be potential solution to overcome this challenge.
