Good news: China’s Xi promises 1bn COVID-19 vaccine doses to Africa

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/11/29/chinas-xi-promises-1-billion-covid-19-vaccine-doses-to-africa

President Xi Jinping has said China would offer another one billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines to African countries and would encourage Chinese companies to invest no less than $10bn in Africa across the next three years.

The pledge of additional vaccine doses – on top of the nearly 200 million that China has already supplied to the continent – comes as concerns intensify about the spread of a new variant of the coronavirus, known as Omicron, which was first identified in southern Africa

Prospects For The Financial Year

The Group has obtained approval from the authority to operate at 100% workforce
from September 1, 2021 onwards,

"thus the operation of the Group is expected to recovery on the remaining quarter".
In addition to the orders from the medical sector, the non-medical businesses are also expected to contribute positively towards the revenue.

Thus, barring any unforeseen circumstances, the Group is expecting the performance in the remaining financial year to be satisfactory.

Material Change in Performance of Current Quarter compared with Preceding
Quarter (Q3/21 vs Q2/21)
The Group’s revenue increased by 14% from RM178.3 million to RM202.7 million.
The increase was mainly attributable to the acceleration of progress of certain on-
going projects and higher metallic silicon sales during the current quarter under
review.
The Group’s PBT increased from RM14.5 million to RM34.3 million, mainly due to
higher metallic silicon price after offsetting higher raw materials cost and operating
expenses.

PMBTECH Current year prospects

As the world economy is fast recovering from the effects of the pandemic, the
commodity market has reacted positively and price of metallic silicon have risen to
record high.
The recent surge in the silicon price was primarily caused by the initiative of the
Chinese Government to cut back on the power supply to the silicon industries as well
as tightening of environmental control in China. However, we are of the opinion that
the record high price of the metallic silicon will correct by itself and stabilize in the
near future.
With the recent encouraging commodities market, the Group is expected to benefit
from the positive movement in the price of metallic silicon after offsetting higher
logistics, raw material and operating cost. Meanwhile, the Group’s other aluminium
related businesses are gradually moving in the positive position.
The Group acknowledges the market risks and challenges such as volatility of selling
price, currency exchange rate and the increasing raw material and operating cost
and will continue to focus on production efficiency and to undertake appropriate
austerity measures at all time

Greetings from *RHB Research*,

Update on *VS Industry (VSI MK, BUY, TP:MYR1.96 based on 23x FD CY22F EPS).*

The company shared that it has acquired 3 parcels of adjacent land for *future capacity expansion measuring 386k sf, or 8.9 acres in Senai, Johor (within close proximity of its existing facilities) for MYR30m.*

Currently, the Group’s Malaysia operations have a built-up area of 2.1m sf. spanning across more than 50 acres of land. The latest land acquisition will *boost VS’ total land area to close to 60 acres in total*.

*The Group’s existing capacity has been fully allocated to its existing customers.*

*Our take:*

*We take the land acquisition positively as this signifies management’s optimism and confidence on the sustainable order flows prospects.* Its balance sheet is sturdy enough to fund the purchase with close to zero net gearing as at 4QFY21.

On the prevailing challenges of labour supply, components shortage and pandemic, management has taken various measures to minimize and mitigate the impact and therefore is *not expecting any major disruption to its operations.*

*VS is scheduled to release its 1QFY22 results on 16th Dec* and we expect more guidance to be provided on the orders and volume for 2022 by then.

We do not expect any immediate earnings impact from the land purchase and *make no changes to our earnings forecasts and recommendation.*

The World Ahead 2022
International travel will get easier, but restrictions will remain
Cross-border travel will probably not recover to pre-covid levels until 2024

Nov 8th 2021
BY SIMON WRIGHT: INDUSTRY EDITOR, THE ECONOMIST
The start of the pandemic was characterised by empty supermarket shelves, as global supply chains creaked under the strain of panic buying and the disruption caused by covid-19. The system soon adjusted. But one shortage that has not been alleviated is that of international travellers. Planes are still often half-full at best and many of the world’s airports remain sparsely populated. International arrivals fell by nearly 75% in 2020, according to the un’s World Travel Organisation, with 1bn fewer people taking trips abroad. The figures for 2021 are not expected to be much better. But the prospects for 2022 look less gloomy.

More people will rediscover the pleasures of jumping on a plane to go on a spontaneous city break, attend a long-planned family wedding or take the holiday of a lifetime. And while executives will continue to spend a lot of time sitting bolt upright in video calls, more will also recline in business-class seats. In the decades before the pandemic, international travel grew rapidly, with the number of visitors to foreign countries tripling between 1990 and 2019. Budget airlines, growing prosperity and more leisure time underpinned this growth. These forces will eventually reassert themselves.

Silicon Metal Inventory Expanded 20,000 mt on Week

Nov 12,2021 16:32CST
Source:SMM

The social metal inventory of silicon metal across Huangpu port, Kunming city and Tianjin port increased 20,000 mt from the previous week to 89,000 mt as of Friday November 12.

SHANGHAI, Nov 12 (SMM) – The social metal inventory of silicon metal across Huangpu port, Kunming city and Tianjin port increased 20,000 mt from the previous week to 89,000 mt as of Friday November 12.

The inventory at Tianjin Port increased as the shipments from silicon metal factories in Xinjian arrived. Huangpu Port saw palpable increase in inventory as the traders actively made shipments to the port as the scheduled delivery is approaching. The silicon metal factories in Yunnan maintained high operating rates, and the in-plant inventory kept being transported to Kunming.

It is worth noticing that the YoY growth of social inventory has changed from negative growth to positive readings for the first time since May, 2021. The inventory at ports may decline in the following week after the goods were shipped to overseas markets. But the inventory in Kunming is likely to rise.

Edge Weekly
Cover Story: Why companies are flocking to Batu Kawan Industrial Park
Liew Jia Teng

The Edge Malaysia
18/11/2021

Interestingly, Shah Alam-based automated test equipment (ATE) manufacturer QES is teaming up with US-based Applied Engineering to provide hi-tech electromechanical contract manufacturing services in BKIP.

QES managing director and president Chew Ne Weng says the primary reasons for its investment in BKIP are the availability of large tracts of land as well as complete infrastructure such as roads, connecting bridges to Penang Island and Prai Mainland, internet broadband, water and electricity.

“BKIP is heavily promoted by InvestPenang and Penang Development Corp (PDC), both of which are under the state government. Many MNCs and local listed companies are there, so it’s good for the ecosystem and supply chain because there will be potential business opportunities among the pool of investing companies in BKIP,” he notes.

QES has acquired a two-acre parcel at BKIP from the PDC for around RM5 million and budgeted about RM10 million to construct a factory there, slated for completion by end-2023 or early 2024.

“Our plan is to expand the QES manufacturing division there for both ATE equipment and IR4.0 Smart Manufacturing Solutions. We are also working on integrating or relocating the Applied Engineering-QES (AE-QES) JV company to the new QES BKIP factory,” says Chew.

He predicts that Batu Kawan will eventually overtake Bayan Lepas, as the former’s land area is much larger. Meanwhile, nearby areas such as Penang Science Park will add to the expanding industrialisation of BKIP in the long run.

Therefore, says Chew, Penang will need a larger area for the airport over the next decade or so, owing to the tremendous growth of MNCs relocating to BKIP or Penang Island.
