ā€¢ Foreign Exchange Losses: PetChem experienced higher foreign exchange losses on the revaluation of loans to a joint operation company and of a subsidiary. Currency fluctuations can have a significant impact on the profits of companies that operate internationally.

ā€¢ Acquisition Costs: The acquisition of leading Swedish Chemical Group Perstorp and the associated costs also contributed to the decrease in profits. Acquisitions can lead to short-term financial strain due to the initial costs involved.
ā€¢ https://theedgemalaysia.com/article/petronas-chemicals-subsidiary-buys-swedish-firm-rm7b

ā€¢ Global Economic Conditions: The global economic recovery has been sluggish, which affects demand and prices for chemical products.

ā€¢ Dividends: The decrease in dividends is likely a result of the lower profits. Companies often adjust their dividend payouts based on their profitability to maintain financial stability.

Hence to answer his question, while higher revenues indicate that PetChem was able to generate more sales, various factors like compressed margins, increased operating expenses, lower plant utilization, foreign exchange losses, and acquisition costs have negatively impacted their profit margins and dividends. Itā€™s a complex interplay of operational performance and market conditions that affect the financial health of a healthy company like PetChem

Leesa688 Dont understand how PetChem works. Revenue increases but profit margin plunges! I can understand it if revenue plunges and this is from the stable of Petronas well run companies! Now even their dividend plunges!
Petronas Gas and Petronas Dagangan have always done well!
15/03/2024 7:43 PM

In the case of Petronas Chemicals Group (PetChem), several reasons have been identified for this financial outcome:

ā€¢ Compressed Margins: Despite higher revenues, PetChemā€™s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) were lower mainly due to compressed margins. This could be due to increased competition, higher production costs, or lower selling prices for their products.

ā€¢ Higher Operating Expenses: An increase in operating expenses, such as maintenance and energy & utilities costs, can reduce profit margins even if revenues are up.

ā€¢ Plant Utilization Rate: PetChem reported a lower plant utilization rate due to higher plant statutory turnaround and maintenance activities, which resulted in lower production and sales volumes. This means that even though they may have sold their products at higher prices, they sold less overall, impacting profits.

EngineeringProfit And put all in one basket? And all in at one go- not in batches?

But no worries, klse is heading 1660 by end of the year. Unless something bad like red QR etc etc, you wouldn't have to lose your $ in a money making company that pays dividend
15/03/2024 6:47 AM

Do you know that the earnings per share (EPS) of FBM KLCI component stocks on an aggregate basis were largely unchanged from where they were a decade ago?.

EPS points to how much money a company makes for each share of its stock. A higher EPS indicates greater value because investors will pay more for a companyā€™s shares if they think the company has higher profits relative to its share price.

This, perhaps, explains FBM KLCIā€™s sluggish performance and its struggle to convincingly cross the psychological level of 1,600 points, which is well-below the record-high of 1,895.18 points seen in April 2018.

Bloomberg data for 10 benchmark indices found that most indices have shown an increase in forward EPS between March 2014 to March 2024, although this was not the case for the FBM KLCI. The Dow Jones Industrial Averageā€™s forward EPS increased by 88.4% and Indiaā€™s Sensex Index is up 163.5% in the 10-year period.

Meanwhile, the forward EPS of Singaporeā€™s Straits Times Index and Indonesia Stock Exchange Index were up by 35.6% and 48% respectively, in the same period. In contrast, the FBM KLCIā€™s forward EPS slipped by 0.3%.

Experts say that the Malaysian stock universeā€™s more moderate earnings prospects are the result of the ā€œOld Economyā€ syndrome. In simpler terms, this means the biggest players in the market are primarily involved in traditional businesses and their operations have largely matured in terms of growth and market penetration.

Take the FBM KLCI for an example, about two-thirds of its total market capitalisation is controlled by mega-caps from just three sectors, namely, banking (42.12%), utilities (14.75%) and telecommunications (10.8%).

It is worth noting that the technology sector, often referred to as a high-growth sector, has zero representation in the FBM KLCI as no company has met the minimum market capitalisation criteria. The only technology company on the index, Inari Amertron Bhd, which is involved in chip assembly and testing, was booted out of the FBM KLCI last June.

It is rather unfortunate that after decades of developing the national semiconductor scene, which has become the worldā€™s sixth largest semiconductor exporter, Malaysia has no technology representative on the list of top 30 listed companies by market value. Most semiconductor companies on Bursa Malaysia are valued at RM1bil or below...

Thanks God that YTLPower is one of the 3 Main Sectors. Looing forward that it will hit back to 1800 one day..

*Malaysia Plantations*

*The unsung heroes of the nation (and the world)*

11 March marks the 4th anniversary of COVID-19 pandemic. We pay tribute to the plantation sector that has contributed immensely during the pandemic. While not undermining the sacrifices by the front-liners and others in the fight against COVID-19, this sector has played its part in ensuring food security, job security, and health security not just for the nation but the world over. Despite rising cost challenges and falling output, the sector still made huge monetary contribution of >MYR23b over the past 4 years in various forms of direct and indirect taxes, and contributions.

*>MYR23b in ā€œsocialā€ contribution to the grateful for*

Between 2020 and 2023, the plantation sector has contributed approx. MYR6.1b in windfall profit levy, MYR3.7b in export duties, MYR1.3b in MPOB CESS (see Fig.1), MYR0.2b in Prosperity Taxes, >MYR6b in Sabah and Sarawak Sales Taxes (our back-of-the-envelope estimates), and easily >MYR6b in corporate income taxes and individual taxes (by the smallholders) to the Malaysian government . The sector is said to be among the highest tax contributor in terms of total taxes (including windfall profit levy, export duties, CESS, and Sabah and Sarawak Sales Taxes, in addition to corporate taxes). Monies collected by the government were channelled to (among others) nation building and running of many social programmes including free COVID vaccinations given to the people and cash handouts given to the needy during the pandemic.

*Food & health security roles often taken for granted*

Palm oil holds more than 50% market share in the global vegetable oils trade. Hence, its continuous availability is crucial to global food security as well as health security. Throughout the pandemic, palm oil exports never stopped as the government allowed palm oil cultivation to proceed.

Besides food use, the continuous availability of palm oil and palm products also meant there was the much-needed ingredients to make personal cares and cleaning products such hand wash, soap, laundry detergents, hand sanitisers, etc that the world desperately needed in its fight against the highly infectious COVID-19 virus.

*Job security for the locals as well as guest workers*
Many people lost their jobs at the start of the pandemic and had to draw down their hard-earned life savings to make ends meet. Prior to the pandemic, the sector has a strong workforce of 437,400 in Malaysia comprising local and guest workers. During the pandemic, the plantation sector was among the few granted special approval by the government to operate. Social distancing at workplace was inherent in the estates given that one worker typically covers more than 10 hectares of estates, providing a naturally safe working environment. Workers were even given free COVID vaccinations by their employers. At the height of the pandemic, outsiders had limited access to the staffsā€™ housing quarters and estate operations to ensure the safety of their workers and families. While country borders were mostly closed initially, guest workers remained employed throughout and were paid decent wages (plus incentives) that allowed them to repatriate the much-needed income to provide for their families back home (presumably equally affected by the pandemic).

Well Done Guys!

My Best Advice for Making Big Profits with Low-Priced Stocks what more if it's a PN 17..

Be patient with your investments. Low-priced stocks generally need more time than their bigger brethren. A healthy dose of patience will go a long way for a low-price stock portfolio.

As long as your cost is below PNB cost there's nothing to fear. Beside it gives you confidence when you see your P&L is positive and EverGreen..

Another best advice is to follow Auntie Huang. If she can managed 7 years hibernating with dead corpse, what is there to worry with Sapnrg.. Hihihi
