KOTA KINABALU, Nov 11 — Malaysia should expedite the procurement of vaccines in the process of being approved for use in other countries, said Sabah Nominated Assemblyman Datuk Yong Teck Lee.
Yong, who is also the Sabah Progressive Party president, called on the federal government to make known of its plans looking at the recent developments on vaccines in the final stages of trials.
He said with the vaccines entering the third and final trials, other Asian countries like the Philippines and Indonesia have been fast tracking to get them, and thus Malaysia should get cracking as well.
“The Philippines aims to have coronavirus vaccine shots by next year to inoculate about a fourth of the population. Its government is evaluating 17 vaccines in various stages and in talks to source the supply to initially vaccinate 25 million people out of their 100 million population.
“Malaysia should likewise get cracking now to evaluate various vaccines that are in the final stages of trials so as to prepare for mass vaccinations for its frontliners and citizens. It is important that these vaccines are provided free so that all our citizens will benefit,” he said in a statement here today.
Yong said the government should also come up with interim guidance in the order of priority for the vaccine recipients.
He said it is learnt that Pfizer and BioNTech had developed a vaccine which is more than 90 per cent effective in providing protection against the Covid-19 virus and that doses of the vaccine are expected to roll out from December.

"This is good news and the government should immediately fast track to ensure that this vaccine can be obtained the soonest. China’s Sinopharm has also reported success in its Covid-19 vaccine pursuit," he said.

Yong stressed that vaccine is the best long term solution to the Covid-19 pandemic, which would ultimately end the hardships and the economic crisis affecting nations and the people. — Bernama

PETALING JAYA: It’s possibly a gamechanger in the fight against Covid-19 but health experts have pointed out the logistical challenges in obtaining the Pfizer vaccine.

These experts said the cold storage requirements of the vaccine would be a logistical challenge for Malaysia.

The pharmaceutical giant’s vaccine uses the messenger RNA technology that requires the vaccine to be kept at -70°C and below.

Universiti Malaya epidemiologist Prof Datuk Dr Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud said the storage of such a vaccine in large quantities even in big towns in Malaysia would be a challenge as -70°C freezers were not easily available.

“For remote clinics in Sabah and Sarawak, this is going to be an even bigger challenge as getting the supplies to the clinics already takes quite a long time, what more to store it for use afterwards, ” he said when contacted.

I believe PP would be done before end of this year cos the money is to finance vaccine distribution.

@chua, China haven't release full data on trials, how to approve? You must have basis to study and see if all is ok. It is total responsibility to make sure all are good before approving. We are talking about human lives here, not if something go wrong can redo. So many things to consider on side effect on pregnant women, old people, people with high blood, with diabetes, children, school kids..etc etc.

@chua, approved with MOH registration for public use and emergency use is different. Then again, Malaysia not yet approved even for emergency use yet but other countries like UAE, Bahrain already approved Sinopharm for emergency use.

Reports came out Etihad air crew also uses Sinopharm already.

(Reuters) - China National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharm) said on Wednesday the data from large-scale, late-stage clinical trials for its unit's COVID-19 vaccine are "better than expected".

Sinopharm's unit China National Biotec Group (CNBG) has moved two vaccine candidates into Phase 3 clinical trials outside China in multiple countries including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt involving more 50,000 participants in total.

The trials are nearing their ends, Sinopharm said in a statement on Chinese social media WeChat.
