The CEO of Covid-19 vaccine maker Moderna warned Wednesday that the coronavirus that has brought world economies to a standstill and overwhelmed hospitals will be around “forever.”

Public health officials and infectious disease experts have said there is a high likelihood that Covid-19 will become an endemic disease, meaning it will become present in communities at all times, though likely at lower levels than it is now.

Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel appeared to agree Wednesday that Covid-19 will become endemic, saying “SARS-CoV-2 is not going away.”

“We are going to live with this virus, we think, forever,” he said during a panel discussion at the JPMorgan Healthcare Conference.

China saw its biggest daily increase in COVID-19 cases in more than five months as new infections in Hebei Province surrounding Beijing continued to rise. Hebei accounted for 82 of the 85 new local infections reported on Sunday, with Liaoning Province also reporting two new cases and Beijing reporting one new case. The country also saw 18 new imported infections from overseas. The total number of new cases stood at 103, the highest since 127 cases were reported on July 30.

BEIJING: China reported 63 new Covid-19 infections on Thursday – the highest single-day tally since July – as authorities try to stamp out an outbreak of the virus in a city of 11 million near Beijing.

The virus first emerged in central China in late 2019, but since then authorities have largely brought the situation under control through travel restrictions, strict lockdowns and mass testing.

But a recent outbreak in northern Hebei province, which surrounds Beijing, has seen cases spike and prompted mass testing, school closures and travel links being cut into the province.

On Thursday, there were 51 more cases reported in the province, the National Health Commission reported – plus another 69 asymptomatic cases.

China has imposed a lockdown in its northern city of Shijiazhuang after Hebei province on Wednesday reported 63 coronavirus infections, the mainland’s highest daily number for months.
The whole of Shijiazhuang, which has a population of 11 million, was placed under lockdown measures, with passenger train services suspended to prevent further spread of the virus, according to state news agency Xinhua. Flights and coach services to Beijing, 300km (186 miles) northeast of Shijiazhuang, were cancelled.
The 63 infections – identified on Tuesday and announced on Wednesday – prompted a top Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) official to warn that the tally might rise further in the coming days.

KUALA LUMPUR: Kossan Rubber Industries Bhd has detected an additional 563 positive Covid-19 cases as of Dec 21 and the affected plant will remain closed until Dec 30.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, the rubber glove maker said another 7,000 employees were screened for Covid-19 following its Dec 16 statement that 427 positive cases had been detected at the premises of one of its plants.

The company had conducted a re-screening for the employees in the affected plant premises, it said.

"Arising from the subsequent screening, an additional 563 positive cases were detected as at Dec 21, 2020.

"Due to continuous efforts of mitigation, containment and prevention of the widespread pandemic, the affected plant premises will remain closed until Dec 30, 2020," it said.
