The United States saw a record high number of new daily Covid-19 cases for the second day in a row on Saturday, figures from Johns Hopkins University showed, as warnings grew over its spread.

The country reported 88,973 new infections between 8:30 pm Friday and 8:30 pm Saturday, the figures showed, substantially above the previous day's 79,963.

A total of 8,568,625 cases have been reported in the United States with 224,751 deaths, the highest in the world in absolute terms.

The worst current outbreaks in the country are in the north and midwest, and some 35 of the 50 states are seeing an increase in case numbers.

The US reported more than 80,000 new coronavirus infections Friday -- the highest daily case number since the pandemic began.

That comes amid other bleak patterns including rising hospitalizations and daily death tolls across the country, with experts warning that the worst is yet to come.

The U.S. reported more than 60,000 new coronavirus cases for the second day in a row, as the spread continues to accelerate in most states.

The widespread nature of the current surge differentiates it from the spring and summer waves. On Wednesday, 24 states recorded more than 1,000 new cases, a contrast to the summer when California, Texas and Florida accounted for the majority of daily cases.

From September to October, there has been a big rise in new Covid-19 cases in several states, as well as a rise in hospitalizations resulting from the virus.

And the number of those hospitalized continues to rise, hitting 40,271 on Wednesday, the most since Aug. 21, according to the Covid Tracking Project. That number has been climbing steadily since Sept. 20 and is up 31% since Oct. 1.

Although the virus is spreading in all regions of the country, several Midwestern states are among the hardest-hit. Wisconsin has reported more than 80,000 cases over the past month. During the prior month, it reported just over 33,000.

The US is now well into the dreaded fall surge, fueled by indoor socializing, outbreaks at schools and pandemic fatigue.

More than 1,100 new deaths were reported Wednesday -- the highest daily toll in more than a month, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

It's not just the soaring numbers of new cases that's concerning. It's also the rising numbers of deaths and hospitalizations -- which could reduce care for patients who don't even have Covid-19.

"Hospitals are starting to fill up," Utah Gov. Gary Herbert said Thursday.

"We've seen, in the past couple of weeks, that our health care system is at capacity," state epidemiologist Dr. Angela Dunn said.
"I don't know what to do anymore," she said. "I'm really not trying to scare anyone. I'm just trying to inform you of what's going on and give you the facts."

An average of almost 10,000 people tested positive for the new coronavirus (Covid-19) per day over the past week in Belgium, as hospitalisations and deaths rise sharply, according to Sciensano’s latest figures on Thursday.

Between 12 and 18 October, an average of 9,692.6 new people tested positive per day, which is an increase of 75% compared to the week before.

Additionally, 319.1 new hospitalisations per day were recorded on average between 15 and 21 October, up from 244.4 per day the week before. On both Tuesday and Wednesday, more than 400 new Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospital.

In total, 3,274 coronavirus patients are currently in hospital, which is 305 more than yesterday. Of those patients, 525 are in intensive care, 39 more than yesterday. Patients on a ventilator number 272 – 24 more than yesterday.

From 15 to 21 October, an average number of 33.1 deaths occurred per day, up from the average of 26.4 the week before.

The total number of deaths in the country since the beginning of the pandemic is currently 10,539 – 50 more than yesterday.

The Netherlands recorded another 9,283 positive coronavirus tests on Thursday, easily surpassing the record set just one day ago by over 500. The data from public health agency RIVM showed a 19 percent increase in new infections compared to a week ago.

The RIVM said that 46 more people also died from Covid-19, raising the total in the Netherlands to 6,919. Some 262,405 people in the country have tested positive for the viral infection since the end of February.

Dutch hospitals have become so busy that the first patients from the Netherlands were likely to be transferred to a German facility for care as early as Friday, said Ernst Kuipers, the head of the Dutch acute care providers network. It would be the first international patient transfer since May.

At least 238 more people were admitted to hospitals for treatment of Covid-19. Some 56 patients were moved into intensive care during the past 24 hours, patient coordination office LCPS said.

It raised the total number of patients being treated for the disease on Thursday to 2,003. That figure was 31 percent higher than a week ago, and was four times the total reported on September 24.

The Thursday total rose by 60 after accounting for deaths and hospital discharges. That patient total included 1,540 being treated outside of intensive care, an increase of 47, and 463 in intensive care, an increase of 13 compared to Wednesday.

Italy on Thursday reported a fresh record high in new coronavirus infections, topping 16,000 daily cases for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

According to Health Ministry data, the national tally has now reached 465,726 confirmed cases.

The country also reported 136 new deaths in the last 24 hours, with the national death toll rising to 36,968.

The northern Lombardy region remains the one with more daily cases, at over 4,000, with many concentrated in Milan – Italy's financial hub.

On Thursday, an overnight curfew will take effect in the city and the whole region, as local authorities are trying to stop the second wave of contagion.

We're still amid the pandemic and the constant rise of infections imposes us to keep the attention very high," Conte said. "However, now, based on last spring's experience, we need to act, being vigilant and prudent. We'll be ready to intervene again, if necessary."

France reported more than 40,000 new coronavirus cases for the first time, as the government prepares to expand curfews beyond Paris and some other big cities as the virus gained momentum.

Confirmed coronavirus cases jumped by a record 41,622, French health authorities reported on Thursday. The weekly pace of infections has been rising for 20 days.

Daily virus cases are hitting records around Europe, including new highs in the Netherlands and Greece. In France, authorities will expand a curfew to more regions, with 46 million people ordered to stay at home from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting Friday at midnight, as hospitalizations and deaths climb.

“These measures are difficult,” Prime Minister Jean Castex said in a briefing. “The coming weeks will be tough. Our hospital services will be put to the test and the number of deaths will continue to increase.”

Castex said it’s too early to measure the effects of the curfews already in place, including in six of France’s biggest ten cities, and next week will show whether the measures are enough to control the virus. The government could tighten restrictions further, he said.


The virus reproduction number in France is around 1.35, meaning cases are on track to double every two weeks, the prime minister said. French deaths linked to the coronavirus increased by 162 to 34,210 on Thursday, with the seven-day average climbing to 155, the highest level since May.

UK coronavirus daily death toll rises by 189 with 21,242 new cases.

The latest fatalities bring the UK's official Covid-19 death toll to 44,347.

There are 7,433 people in hospital with the virus, of which 711 are in ventilator beds, the Department of Health and Social Care said.

BERLIN: German Health Minister Jens Spahn has tested positive for coronavirus, his ministry said Wednesday, as the country battles a spike in new cases.

Spahn, a chief ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel and an architect of the government's response to the pandemic, went into isolation at home with "cold symptoms", according to the ministry.

Russia has confirmed a record daily death toll from the coronavirus at 317 fatalities Wednesday as the country sees a record-breaking surge in cases but resists reintroducing strict lockdown measures.

The previous highest death toll of 286 Covid-19 deaths was recorded last Thursday.

Moscow, the epicenter of Russia’s coronavirus outbreak, confirmed 63 deaths, setting its own record for Covid-19 fatalities. The city now accounts for 6,121 of Russia's Covid-19 deaths.

The record daily death toll comes one day after Russia saw its highest one-day increase of 16,319 new Covid-19 infections. It added 15,700 new infections Wednesday.

Senior Russian healthcare professionals have said they expect the country's number of daily Covid-19 infections to peak at 20,000 before stabilizing by November.

France's new daily COVID-19 cases rose by at least 25,000 for the sixth time in 12 days on Wednesday and the number of people hospitalised for the disease shot up by more than 700 for the third day in a row, suggesting the partial curfew still has to produce effects.

The resurgence of the pandemic is such that the government will likely announce a geographical extension of the curfew, imposed since Saturday on Paris and eight other major cities from 2100 to 0600.

Health experts say it takes generally two weeks for such measures to be visible in the containment of the virus.

Health authorities reported 26,676 new COVID-19 infections, up from Tuesday's 20,468 but below the all-time high of 32,427 reached on Saturday.

The number of people in France who have died from COVID-19 infections rose by 163, to 34,048, versus a months-high seven-day moving average of 144.

The number of people hospitalised for COVID-19 has gone beyond the 13,000 threshold for the first time since June 6.

Italy has registered 15,199 new coronavirus infections over the past 24 hours, the health ministry said on Wednesday, the highest daily tally since the start of the country's outbreak and up from a previous record of 11,705 posted on Sunday.

Tuesday saw 10,874 new cases of the highly contagious virus.

The ministry also reported 127 COVID-related deaths on Wednesday, up from 89 the day before but still far fewer than at the height of the pandemic in Italy in March and April, when a daily peak of more than 900 fatalities was reached.

After declining over the summer, infections have steadily accelerated in the last few months.

They are now far more widely distributed around the country than during Italy's first wave, but the hardest hit region is once again Lombardy, around the financial capital Milan.

On Wednesday, Lombardy accounted for 4,125 of the country's new cases, with Milan and its hinterland close to 2,000 infections over the last 24 hours.

The number of people in intensive care with the virus has risen steadily. It stood at 926 on Wednesday, up from 870 on Tuesday and compared with around 40 in the second half of July.

There are now around the same number of intensive care patients as when the country went into national lockdown on March 9, though at that time they were far more heavily concentrated in northern regions.

The UK has recorded 26,688 new coronavirus cases - a new daily record and a 25% increase on yesterday’s total. Weekly hospital admissions are up 39% in the UK and weekly deaths are up 57% on the previous week.

The latest government figures also show that there were 5,828 COVID-19 patients in hospital in England on Tuesday, up from 3,905 a week ago, while 559 were in ventilation beds, up from 441.

Spain’s Health Ministry reported 16,973 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday -- the highest daily surge since the beginning of the pandemic -- raising the total number of infections to 1,005,295.

The country registered 156 additional fatalities due to the disease, bringing the death toll to 34,366.

Since Sept. 1, active hospitalizations have more than doubled and 5,214 people were confirmed to have died from the disease.

Spain is the only European country besides Russia to have broken the mark of 1 million confirmed cases, although France is also on the verge of crossing the barrier.

Spain is currently seeing the highest level of hospitalizations since the first wave ended, with nearly 13,700 active patients occupying 11.5% of all the country’s hospital beds and 21.5% of intensive care units.

The US is facing an extremely alarming trend in its battle with COVID-19 as cases multiply across most of the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned Wednesday.

“Unfortunately we’re seeing a distressing trend here in the United States with COVID-19 cases increasing in nearly 75% of the country,” Jay Butler, the health body's number two infectious disease expert, warned during a news briefing.

The US has recorded about 50,000 new daily cases in the past week, as well as 700 deaths, according to CDC data.

Butler said the increases are taking part across US, but particularly in the midwest, attributing part of the uptick to people wanting to move in-doors as temperatures drop and as small family and neighborhood gatherings increase with Americans living with the pandemic for more than half-a-year.

Dr. Peter Hotez, the dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, told CNN that as the nation faces COVID restriction fatigue "it's pretty clear that this fall/winter surge is now finally arriving."

"This is going to be a horrible winter, unfortunately," he said.

AstraZeneca shares turned negative Wednesday after a Brazilian health authority, Anvisa, said a volunteer in its coronavirus vaccine study died.

The US reported more than 57,000 new coronavirus cases on Monday, in line with its average over the past week, which in turn is at its highest level since early August.

States collectively reported 57,148 new cases, according to Covid Tracking Project data, up from 48,922 on Sunday and compared with 43,124 on Monday last week.

The latest numbers, as well as a handful of 60,000-plus case days last week, have pulled the national seven-day average to 57,213 new infections a day. That is the highest the rate has been since August 4, when the summer surge — mostly in sunbelt states — was in full swing.

The number of coronavirus patients in US hospitals hit 37,744 on Monday, the highest level since late August amid a summer outbreak.

Russia confirmed 16,319 new Covid-19 cases Tuesday, bringing its official number of cases to 1,431,635 and breaking its record for new infections.

This is at least the fourth record one-day increase in Russia in the past seven days. For the first time since the start of the pandemic, Russia confirmed more than 100,000 Covid-19 cases within a single week from Oct. 12-18.

Russia’s coronavirus information center reported 269 new Covid-19 fatalities Tuesday, bringing the official death toll to 24,635.

The surge in new infections comes as authorities continue to rule out a return to strict restrictions to slow the spread of the virus. Authorities introduced unpopular lockdown measures in spring, when Russia saw fewer than 10,000 daily Covid-19 cases on average.

Italy reported 10,874 new coronavirus infections Tuesday as 145,000 swab tests were performed in the last 24 hours.

Once the epicenter of the European pandemic, Italy registered 89 new deaths, up from 73 Monday, according to the Health Ministry.

Italy continues to see a spike in new COVID-19 cases in several regions, led by northern Lombardy and southern Campania, which were the first two to introduce local curfews this week.

Active infections stand at 142,739, with the national death tally at 36,705, according to official data.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said Tuesday that local measures to contain the second wave of contagion will be allowed, but still needs to be coordinated at the national level.

France again reported more than 20,000 new confirmed coronavirus infections in a day, a total of 20,468, after the daily tally dipped to 13,243 on Monday.

Last week, France saw five days with more than 20,000 new cases per day and two days with more than 30,000. The total now stands at 930,745 and looks set to jump above the 1 million mark before the end of this week if the trend continues.

The health ministry also reported 262 new deaths, including a multi-day batch of 100 from retirement homes, pushing the cumulative death toll to 33,885.

The number of people in hospital with COVID-19 rose by 797 to 12,458, the biggest single-day increase since early April. The number of people in intensive care rose by 78 to 2,177.

Spain is nearing the milestone of one million confirmed coronavirus infections, and on Monday registered a new record high number of cases reported in a single day. On Monday – no data is supplied over the weekend – the Health Ministry communicated 37,889 cases, the highest number seen in one of its daily reports. Before yesterday, the peaks in the data had been seen on the last two Mondays of September, with around 31,000 cases. Since the start of the pandemic, a total of 974,449 coronavirus cases have been detected in Spain.

Fernando Simón, director of the Health Ministry’s Coordination Center for Health Alerts (CCAES), said on Monday night when he presented the latest data, that Spain is not progressing “as well as we would like.” Last week the government’s chief epidemiologist was talking about a stabilization of the pandemic in Spain. But yesterday he called the incidence “very high” and said that there is “a small rising trend,” similar to that being registered in the rest of Europe.

The occupation of ICU beds has also risen since the last report, which was released on Friday. One in every four ICU beds (21%) is now occupied by a coronavirus patient, again with major differences from region to region. In Ceuta, Melilla, Madrid, Aragón and La Rioja, the occupancy rate is around 40%. Castilla y León, meanwhile, comes in at 36%. In hospitals, one in every 10 ward beds (10.36%) is occupied by a Covid-19 patient across the country. Madrid and the North African city of Melilla exceed 20%. In total, there are 12,945 coronavirus patients receiving hospital treatment.

The UK has recorded another 241 deaths and 21,331 cases as the country continues to battle the second wave of coronavirus.

The latest figures bring the total number of infections to 762,542 while 43,967 people have died since the start of the pandemic.

The last time the UK recorded more than 200 deaths in a single day was on June 5, when there were 258 casualties.

Commenting on the latest rise in reported deaths, Dr Yvonne Doyle, medical director of Public Health England, said: "The trend in deaths is rising sharply.

"Tragically we know that older people and those with underlying health conditions tend to suffer more if they become unwell.

Iran on Monday announced 337 deaths from the novel coronavirus, a record high for a single day in the Middle East country hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"In recent days, we have witnessed an unprecedented increase in mortality from the disease," health ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said in televised remarks.

She said the latest deaths brought to 30,712 the total number of fatalities since Iran reported its first coronavirus cases in February.

The previous record death toll for a day in Iran was 279 announced on Wednesday.

The numbers were also likely to be higher than officially reported, Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi acknowledged on Wednesday, primarily due to testing and reporting protocols.

Tehran and four major cities were partially sealed off from Thursday to midday Sunday in a bid to dissuade Iranians from travelling during holidays.

Russia confirmed 15,982 new Covid-19 cases Monday, bringing its official number of cases to 1,415,316 and breaking the country's record for new infections.

The latest one-day record comes as Russia for the first time since the start of the pandemic confirmed more than 100,000 Covid-19 cases within a week.

A total of 179 people have died from Covid-19 in the past 24 hours. Russia’s official death toll stands at 24,366.

Moscow confirmed 5,376 infections Monday, its highest number of daily cases since recording 5,392 on May 12.

Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has meanwhile ruled out curfews, entry and movement bans and business closures as “absolutely unacceptable and impossible.”

Preliminary daily data from public health agency RIVM showed that over eight thousand more people were diagnosed with a SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection for the third day in a row. The RIVM added 8,015 more infections on Monday, an increase of 17 percent compared to a week ago, and 4.7 percent more than the seven-day average.

The three cities with the most infections were Rotterdam (546), Amsterdam (533) and Utrecht (319). While Rotterdam showed an increase of 24 percent compared to last Monday, Amsterdam positive coronavirus tests dropped by 10 percent. In Utrecht, there was an increase of 74 percent.

Seventeen more deaths were also tied to Covid-19, according to the RIVM. It raised the total number of coronavirus-related deaths in the Netherlands to 6,768.

Figures showed that new Covid-19 hospitalizations were at their lowest point in a week, with 184 people admitted as patients since Sunday. Patient coordination office LCPS said 38 people with the disease were also moved into intensive care.

It brought the total number of coronavirus patients being treated in hospitals up to 1,738, after accounting for deaths and discharges. It was the highest total since May 8.

The total rose by 86 in a single day, including an increase of 15 in intensive care patients bringing that number up to 379. Some 1,359 were being treated outside of the ICU, an increase of 71.

Spain’s cumulative tally of coronavirus infections increased by 37,889 over the weekend, bringing the nationwide total to 974,449, health ministry data showed on Monday.

Total deaths from the virus increased by 217 to 33,992, according to the ministry.

In recent weeks, Spain has frequently reported more than 12,000 cases per day after hitting a record of more than 16,000 in mid-September.

Britain today recorded another 18,804 Covid-19 cases and 80 deaths as both infections and fatalities continue to creep upwards.

In hospitals in England, the number of patients with coronavirus has risen by 1,500 in a week to 4,974. And there were 100 more patients on mechanical ventilator beds.

LONDON — The number of reported coronavirus cases around the world has hit 40 million, according to a tally kept by Johns Hopkins University.

The grim milestone of 40,050,902 confirmed cases on Monday comes as various parts of Europe and the U.S. struggle to deal with an alarming surge in infections.

The dreaded “second wave” began in August in Europe, following the relaxation of national lockdowns implemented in spring.

European governments have scrambled to contain a surge in cases by re-introducing a raft of restrictive measures on public life and the hospitality sector, including the closure or limited opening of pubs, bars and restaurants, restricting social gatherings and even resorting to curfews, now seen in a handful of major French cities, including Paris.

The WHO warned on Friday that Europe’s coronavirus outbreak is “concerning” as the number of available intensive care beds continues to dwindle and near capacity in some regions.

More than 70,450 new coronavirus cases were reported in the United States on Friday, the highest figure since July 24, according to a New York Times database. More than 900 new deaths were recorded.

At least nine states set single-day case records on Friday: Wyoming, Minnesota, Wisconsin, West Virginia, North Dakota, Indiana, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado. And as of midday Saturday, Indiana and Ohio had set records.

The virus has also been surging globally: a record 415,000-plus cases on Friday, a record.

Epidemiologists warn that nearly half of the states in the U.S. are seeing surges unlike anything they experienced earlier in the pandemic. Eighteen states and Guam added more cases this week than in any other week. The nationwide seven-day average has increased by nearly 8,000 daily new cases since last Friday.

The virus has been pummeling some of the least populous states in the country, but their relatively low population numbers can make the total number of known cases deceptive. The surges in rural areas, when calculated by infections per person, have been just as severe as the spikes in densely populated cities in the Sun Belt over the summer.

Uncontrolled outbreaks in the Midwest and Mountain West are driving the surge, according to The Times database. Some states with the fastest growth had relatively few cases until recently, and now rural hospitals are strained.

Per capita, North Dakota and South Dakota are adding more new cases than any states have since the start of the pandemic. Wisconsin — which reported more than 4,160 new cases on Friday, a single-day record for the state — has seven of the 10 metropolitan areas in the United States with the highest rates of recent cases.

Other states with large rural areas — including Wyoming, Idaho, West Virginia, Nebraska, Iowa, Utah, Alaska and Oklahoma — have recently recorded more cases in a seven-day stretch than in any other week of the pandemic.

In the more populous states where case increases are being seen, including Wisconsin and Illinois, the worst numbers are coming not from the largest population centers but from rural counties.

Global coronavirus cases rose by more than 400,000 for the first time late on Friday, a record one-day increase as much of Europe enacts new restrictions to curb the outbreak.

Europe, which successfully tamped down the first surge of infections, has emerged as the new coronavirus epicentre in recent weeks and is reporting on average 140,000 cases a day over the past week.

As a region, Europe is reporting more daily cases than India, Brazil and the United States combined.

Of every 100 infections reported around the world, 34 were from European countries, according to a Reuters analysis. The region is currently reporting a million new infections about every nine days and has reported more than 6.3 million cases since the pandemic began.

Major European countries - United Kingdom, France, Russia, Netherlands and Spain -- accounted for about half of Europe's new cases in the week to Oct. 18, according to Reuters tally.

Average daily new cases of the coronavirus were up by at least 5% on a weekly basis in 39 states on Thursday, according to a CNBC analysis of data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Cases are rising most rapidly in Michigan, Nebraska and South Dakota, according to CNBC’s analysis. Adjusted for population, the Dakotas, Montana, Wisconsin and Utah reported more new cases on Thursday than any other state, according to the analysis.

“I’m pretty glum at the moment because it does look as though in the majority of states there’s an increasing number of cases,” Dr. Bill Schaffner, an epidemiologist at Vanderbilt University, said. “There’s a growing sense of coronavirus fatigue out there. People really want to get back to the old normal.”

Europe’s coronavirus outbreak is “concerning” as cases surge and intensive care units in some regions near capacity, the World Health Organization said.

The international agency is hearing from a number of cities across Europe that say their ICU beds will be completely full in the coming weeks, Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s technical lead, said at a press conference. “That is concerning as we approach the flu season,” she added.

When adjusting for population, the number of new coronavirus infections in Europe has now overtaken the United States. Europe is reporting 187 new Covid-19 cases per million people, based on a seven-day average, compared with 162 new Covid-19 cases per million people in the U.S.
