Lotte Group has been highly concerned over whether the appellate court's upcoming ruling Friday on Chairman Shin Dong-bin's bribery charges will set him free or not, industry officials said Thursday.

Industry officials say Lotte will face huge risks in its businesses here and outside of Korea, if the absence of the top decision-maker lingers for more than a year if the court decides to keep him in prison.
Lotte has postponed its decisions on major M&A deals worth 11 trillion won since the chairman's arrest.

It has also suspended a plan by Lotte Chemical to invest 4 trillion won in Indonesia to build a giant petrochemical complex on land it bought from the state-run Krakatau Steel in 2017. Lotte Vice Chairman Hwang Kag-gyu told reporters in September that many of Lotte's businesses including those in Indonesia have been suspended due to the internal matter.

Former President Lee Myung-bak will be sentenced in his corruption trial on Friday.

Prosecutors have sought a 20-year prison term, W15 billion fine and the forfeiture of W11.1 billion.

Lotte chairman Shin Dong-bin will also be sentenced on appeal the same day. Shin was jailed in February for giving W7 billion in bribes to former President Park Geun-hye to win duty-free licenses.
