Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirms 35 human infections of the novel Langya Henipavirus in China's Shandong and Henan provinces. The CDC told Taipei Times that they would begin to establish nucleic acid testing, track close contacts of patients, and conduct genome sequencing.

Health officials in China are now monitoring the transmission of this novel zoonotic virus that has infected dozens of people, despite having no known close contact.

A study titled "A Zoonotic Henipavirus in Febrile Patients in China," published in the New England Journal of Medicine, reports a new henipavirus linked to the fever-causing illness reported in China.

The researchers of the study investigated 35 patients that have acute Langya henipavirus in Shandong and Henan provinces, of which 26 were infected with Lanya virus only and no other pathogens.

All 26 patients experienced fever, 54% reported fatigue, 50% had a cough, 50% experienced a loss of appetite, 46% also had muscle pain, 38% complained of nausea, and 35% had headaches and vomiting. More so, 54% showed a decrease in white blood cells, while 35% had low platelet count, 35 had liver failure, and 8% had kidney failure.

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 8): The Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association (Margma) estimated that the Malaysian glove industry suffered losses of about RM1.8 billion from 2020 to 2022 as a result of the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sanctions on six glove companies.

Margma president Dr Supramaniam Shanmugam also said the CBP’s import ban for the four glove industry players, namely YTY Group, Smart Glove, Brightway Group and Supermax Corp Bhd, will be lifted “very soon”.

DESPITE Malaysia’s Big-Four glove makers having to grapple with normalisation of average selling prices (ASPs), rubber products remained dominant in 3Q 2021, allowing the industry to continue to thrive and contribute to the country’s economy.

Until October 2021, the overall exports of rubber and rubber products increased by 70.7% to RM63.2 bil from RM37 bil within the same period in 2020, according to the Malaysian Rubber Council (MRC).

“Large deployment of vaccination ramps up demand for medical gloves,” revealed MRC. “Latex goods sector continues to show strong performance amounting to RM51.4 bil, an increase 86.3% over the same period last year at RM27.6 bil.”

The sector maintained its pace as the leader of the rubber products exports from January to October 2021 at 92.7%. Rubber gloves remain the highest earner with export revenue of almost RM50 bil, an increase of almost 91% from the previous year

Supermax Corp Bhd's US-based subsidiary Maxter Healthcare Inc is planning a major manufacturing facility in Texas to increase glove production.

In a statement, the rubber glove maker said the facility will be built in four phases, with the first one to start in the first quarter of 2022 and production to be possible from this phase by the fourth quarter of the same year.

"Each phase is expected to produce 400 million gloves per month. When all four phases are completed, the total installed capacity will be a whopping 1.6 billion gloves per month or 19.2 billion gloves per annum," Supermax said, adding that its board of directors had approved a total capital spending of US$550 million (about RM2.32 billion) for the capacity expansion.

The investment identified for the first phase will total US$350 million and comprise the group's North America manufacturing headquarters, a research and development centre, a training centre and an employee facility centre, said Supermax.
