PETALING JAYA: Datasonic Group Bhd, which has seen its market capitalisation jump more than 17 times since its listing in September 2012, continues to reach new heights despite the stock exchange regulator's caution to investors in the trading of its stocks and call warrants, making the possibility of the counter being accorded "designated security" status very real.

"We really don't know how far its share price can go, but if it continues to soar, Datasonic may be given 'designated securities' status by the authority," TA Securities Investment Manager Lam Chi Mun told SunBiz.

Declaring a counter as a "designated security" does not stop trading in the stock but does seek to curb excessive speculation by requiring payment upfront before purchasing and a free balance of securities before selling.

After all, stock exchange regulator Bursa Malaysia drew criticism the last time it declared a stock "designated security", with players opining that it had acted too slowly.

The most recent stock given "designated securities" status was Harvest Court Industries Bhd, which saw its shares climbing drastically after the prime minister's second son Nazifuddin Najib bought into the company.

Harvest was declared a "designated security" back in mid-November 2011. It was lifted two months later.

Analysts observe that institutional participation in Datasonic is insignificant, signalling that retail investors are playing an active role in driving the share price up.

"We don't see big funds and strategic investors holding the stock, maybe retail buying (is being done) on the momentum they have seen in the company," said Interpac Securities head of research Pong Teng Siew.

According to Datasonic's latest annual report major shareholder Datuk Abu Hanifah, who is also the managing director, holds a 68.55% stake, inclusive of the indirect interest through Dibena Enterprise Sdn Bhd. Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera holds 2.93%.

Datasonic, an electronic identification company, is seen as the main beneficiary of the compulsory migration to the new MyKad. It posted a net profit of RM81.90 million for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2013, representing a leap in growth of 191.27% as a result of higher revenue earned.

Since its listing, the company has undertaken a number of corporate exercises. It has announced two rounds of bonus issues, once in April 2013 and another just in February. It has also split its shares, dividing one share with a par value of 50 sen each into five units of 10 sen each.

The company, which listed on Bursa Malaysia on September 3 2012 with a market capitalisation of RM180 million, surprisingly saw its market capitalisation reach RM3.21 billion yesterday, up 17.7 times in less than two years even after its corporate exercises.

Datasonic shares hit an all-time high of RM4.87 last Tuesday.

Based on yesterday's closing price of RM4.70, it is more than double than its listing price of RM2, while its price-to-earnings ratio stood at 38.7 times, which is deemed expensive as compared to other small caps.

However, Pong opined that the valuation is "not unreasonable", calling it a characteristic of a high growing stock. "It's notable that the small caps in the local bourse have delivered good results for more than a year but we are quite stumped by the length of this rally," he added.

Bursa Malaysia on Tuesday advised investors to exercise caution and make informed decisions in the trading of Datasonic's shares and call warrants. This was after Bursa Malaysia queried the company on the stock movements last February. The management said then that they were unaware of any corporate developments that might have caused the unusual share price movements.

Last month, Bursa Malaysia advised investors to be cautious on Hong Leong Capital Bhd shares, which has been on a bull run since early last year.

optimus7 Bro, u can see today stil holding well for u to take profit. Go study hlcap, 18th mar they get a friendly reminder from bursa, they drift down until today. If other counter get this reminder, ady limit down loh. Count ursrlf lucky the owner is stil buying, no rule say that they cant buy lower n lower.

被冷眼喻为 小amway 的 zhulian , 今天在大马股市从 抗跌股变成 看跌股，

它都没有亏，而且还给股息共 7sen, 只是昨天出炉的业绩不如预期，

竟然从昨天（22-1-2014）的闭市价 RM4.61 跌到 RM3.6 ,

这非常不合常理。

不合常理，就是人为的。

甚麼人？或那个基金？那间股票行？

大家想不出头绪吧! 无所谓，继续看下去，你就知元凶了。

zhulian 有两个 call warrant,

zhulian - ca 与 zhulian - cb,

zhulian - ca 的cash settlement 是 2粒 ca + RM3,

总票数 = 5千万单位，

30-1-2014 到期，27-1-2014 停止交易（就下个星期罢了）。

如果母股 zhulian RM4.60，

那麼 zhulian-ca 就值得

(RM4.6 - RM3) / 2 = 80sen.

5千万单位的 zhulian-ca,

cimb 就得付出 RM0.8 X 50,000,000 = RM40,000,000 给 zhulian- ca 持有者。

4千万，老兄，4千万，看看最近cimb 的气色（股价表现），要拿出4千万，会不会勉强！

今天zhulian 闭市 RM3.6,

那么 (RM3.6- RM3) / 2 = 30sen,

80sen -30sen =50sen, 每单位zhulian - ca, cimb 省 50sen

5千万单位 zhulian -ca, cimb 就可少付 RM0.5 X 50,000,000 = 2千5百万

今天zhulian 总成交量是12,551,800单位。

如果这些通通都是 cimb 卖的，而且通通都卖在最低价 RM3.60，

RM4.61 - RM3.6 = RM1.01

RM1.01 X 12,551,800 = 1千2百6十多万。

那么它才亏约 1千2百6十多万罢了。

亏了1千2百6十多万，却省下 2千5百万，这笔生意是可做过的，非常划算。
