Iris Corp Bhd has won a RM155.09 million concession to manage Goods and Services Tax (GST) refunds for travellers to Malaysia under the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS).

Iris, a provider of smart-card security solutions, beat four other companies that had submitted tenders for the concession.

Its MD Datuk Tan Say Jim said Iris will build the infrastructure for the system that refunds GST to tourists, including setting up counters and manning them.

“We have been awarded the contract for three years, with the option to extend it for two more years based on our performance. The group will be paid an administrative fee of 15% of the total refunds,” Tan said at the company’s AGM yesterday.

Tan said Iris will jointly manage the concession with partner Global Blue SA, a retail systems company based in Switzerland, under a joint-venture (JV) company Global Blue TRS Malaysia Sdn Bhd, in which Iris will hold 51% equity.

Tan said the implementation of the TRS complements Iris’ core business of providing security solutions and will contribute to the company’s growth.

Tourism Malaysia has reportedly set a Visit Malaysia Year 2014 target of 28 million tourists, who are expected to spend a total of RM76 billion in the country.

In 2013, Malaysia registered 25.7 million tourists with tourist receipts of RM65.44 billion. Tan said despite making losses for the first-quarter of its financial year ending 2015 (1QFY15), Iris sees better performance for the second-half (2H) of FY15.

KUCHING: The Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) is looking to attract new tourist markets from countries such as South Korea as well as expand its horizons in terms of the different kind of tourism available, such as golf tourism.

This was reiterated during the group’s media familiarisation trip jointly organised with Omni Tours and Travel Sdn Bhd, whereby top Korean executives and editors of Korea’s golf magazine came to Kuching for a three-day visit.

The main objective of the trip is to increase the awareness of Kuching as well as Sarawak as a tourist attraction to Koreans.

March an exciting month for domestic equity market
Posted on March 3, 2015, Tuesday

KUCHING: The equity market is entering an exciting month this March, says MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Bhd (MIDF Research), as March has been historically a positive month for the market.

The research firm explained that after the festivities-interupted February, trading volume tends to pick up in March and price movements are likely to be more meaningful.

Nonetheless, MIDF Research opined that looking at the latest development on Wall Street, investors can look forward to another decent month for equity this month.

The research firm believes that the latest development coming out from Wall Street could mean better days ahead for the ringgit.

It noted the US Federal Reserve has been signalling to the stock markets that the US economy is experiencing disinflation and interest rate is unlikely to be raised soon.

On another note, MIDF Research said earnings for public-listed companies in the fourth quarter of 2014 (4Q14) was relatively decent given the fluctuation in crude oil price movement.

Nevertheless, it said despite the weaker than expected corporate earnings announcement recently, the FBM KLCI aggregated adjusted earnings declined by mere two per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) and actually jumped by nearly 10 per cent quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q) in 4Q14.

“With the existing tourist attractions, efforts for the creation of more value-added icons will continue in turning Labuan into a premier tourist destination, thus generating revenue and an economic spillover for the people.

“The government is serious about making Labuan an attractive destination due to its resources and diversification of the economic sector,” he said.

Tengku Adnan said the improved tourism sector comprising domestic and foreign arrivals, recorded an increase of 47 per cent over the last five years, and required a serious focus to further develop
it.

He said the significant increase was last year with 1.04 million tourists visiting the island.

“Among the visitors, 85,000 were from 121 countries, including the UK, China and Australia.

“We want to see this positive development continue and government efforts and initiatives will be in place to maintain the momentum,” he added. — Bernama

Brent rises above $61, set for first monthly gain since July

By Reuters / Reuters | February 27, 2015 : 6:38 PM MYT

LONDON/SINGAPORE (Feb 27): Crude oil futures rebounded on Friday and Brent headed for its first monthly gain since July, helped by strong investor inflows, an improving demand outlook and supply outages.

At 0955 GMT, Brent crude futures were up $1.50 at $61.54 a barrel, while U.S. crude was up $1.23 at $49.40 a barrel. Both contracts tumbled on Thursday, with U.S. crude falling hardest.

Brent is trading at a premium of about $12 to U.S. crude, which remains hamstrung by massive inventory builds. This is the widest spread since January 2014.

"The main event this week has been the widening of the spread between Brent and WTI (U.S. crude)," Ole Hansen, senior commodity strategist at Saxo Bank, said. "WTI is still only a few dollars above the lows, but Brent has lifted off."

Brent is up around 15 percent this month from January's close of $52.99, on course for its biggest monthly gain since May 2009. U.S. crude is also set for its first monthly rise in eight, but with a modest gain of about 1.9 percent.

Brent is being helped by factors including positive euro zone and Chinese data, plus supply disruptions in Libya, said Hans van Cleef, energy economist at ABN Amro.

China's implied oil demand is set to grow by 3 percent this year, the country's top energy group China National Petroleum Corp said, surpassing the International Energy Agency's forecast of 2.5 percent.

At the same time, disruptions to production and exports from Libya and Iraq in recent weeks have contributed to tightness in the physical market in the Mediterranean.

In the North Sea, Norway's Statoil has shut its Statfjord C platform after discovering cracks in the flare tower. The entire Statfjord field, which includes two other platforms, produced about 81,000 barrels of oil equivalent last year.

But analysts at JBC Energy warned that supply-side support could wane in coming weeks. "Many of the outages that we have witnessed of late appear bound to come back next month," they said in a note.

The latest Baker Hughes rig count number will emerge later on Friday, providing an update on how the U.S. shale industry is responding to lower oil prices.

The active drilling rig count in North Dakota, the country's No. 2 oil-producing state, dropped to 119 on Feb. 26, versus 193 last year, state data showed.
