Two Malaysians in top 50 list for US$1m Global Teacher Prize 2020
KUALA LUMPUR, March 20 — Two Malaysians are among this year’s top 50 world contenders for the Global Teacher Prize award, a competition meant to recognise exceptional educators who have made outstanding contributions to the profession.
The first was English teacher Samuel Isaiah from Sekolah Kebangsaan Runchang in Muadzam Shah, Pahang, who was shortlisted for his outstanding work with the Orang Asli community by championing advanced learning at primary school using tablets and computers.
Isaiah’s method is fairly unique in a rural Orang Asli setting, said Varkey Foundation, the organisation behind the award.
It noted the children at the primary school have learned to love, embrace and use technology and experience English language learning on par with urban schools.
The other, Science teacher Norhailmi Abdul Mutalib from SMK Jerlun, Ayer Hitam, Kedah, made the list for his innovative method in teaching particle physics.
His teaching approach has included empowering his students to decide the direction of their learning and enabling them to produce creative content online through blog writing and video-making, Varkey Foundation said.
Norhailmi had also used collaboration techniques and flipped classrooms to increase students’ performance throughout the year.
The percentage of his students who scored A in science exams increased drastically from only 3.9 per cent in 2015 to 29.85 per cent in 2017 and the percentage of students passing the science subject at his school rose to 96 per cent last year, the organisation added.
“Congratulations to Samuel Isaiah and Norhailmi Abdul Mutalib for reaching the final 50. I hope their stories inspire those looking to enter the teaching profession and highlights the incredible work teachers do all over the world every day,” said Sunny Varkey, the founder.
“Our recent Global Teacher Status Index finally gives academic proof to something that we’ve always instinctively known: the link between the status of teachers in society and the performance of children in school.
“Now we can say beyond doubt that respecting teachers isn’t only an important moral duty — it’s essential for a country’s educational outcomes.”
The Global Teacher Prize Academy, the committee that determines the winner, includes prominent names such as Wendy Kopp, co-founder and CEO of Teach for All and Dean and Professor, Harvard Graduate School of Education, United States; Fareed Zakaria.
A prize committee will pick the top 10 finalists from the 50 shortlisted teachers and a winner will then be chosen by the Global Teacher Prize Academy.
The prize committee and the academy will look for evidence that applicants for the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize had met several criteria.
This includes having employed creative and effective education methods that may be universally replicable, achieving demonstrable student learning outcomes in the classroom and having tangible impact on the community.
The winner will take home US$1 million (RM4.2 million).

politicians don't choose the most efficient path, they choose the path of least resistance................................
me? I think they are ways to get round it, but too complicated for Tan sri M
most effective is testing and isolation, including contacts,.....its testing and contact tracing.....

Gold bursts above $1,700 with market mayhem stoking haven demand
March 9): Gold rallied above $1,700 an ounce as a concerted global rush into havens intensified, with the upswing driven by turmoil in the oil market, the spread of the coronavirus, sinking equities, and expectations of easier monetary policy as recession risks loom ever larger.
The precious metal hit the highest level since 2012 as Brent crude collapsed at the start of trading in Asia, while futures on the S&P 500 Index sank more than 4%. Investors have already driven holdings in bullion-backed exchange-traded funds to a record as the coronavirus slammed the outlook for growth.
The traditional haven has sprinted higher this year, following an 18% surge in 2019, as the global health crisis expanded and central banks cut interest rates to try and stem the damage. Gold has immunity to the virus, according to Goldman Sachs Group Inc., which dubbed the metal as the currency of last resort and predicted that prices could top $1,800 an ounce.
“There’s a clear rush to safe-haven assets at the moment and gold’s a major beneficiary,” said Michael McCarthy, chief market strategist at CMC Markets in Sydney. Markets are concerned that “we could see a more ugly situation before things get better, which of course is good news for gold,” he said.
Spot gold surged as much as 1.8% to $1,703.39 an ounce, the highest since December 2012, and traded at $1,694.54 at 8:33 a.m. in Singapore. The gains came as 10-year U.S. Treasury yields plunged below 0.5% to a record low amid the stampede for safer assets.
The U.S. and Europe now face the “distinct possibility” of technical recessions in the first half as the outbreak hurts demand and supply, and drives investors to safe havens, according to Pacific Investment Management Co.’s Joachim Fels. Over the weekend, Italy locked down a swathe of the nation.
Even after the Federal Reserve implemented an emergency rate cut last week, there are forecasts for more easing, which would benefit non-interest bearing gold. In addition, investors will track this week’s scheduled policy meeting of the European Central Bank.
The surge in bullion prices is boosting miners’ shares. Newcrest Mining Ltd., Australia’s largest gold producer, rose more than 4% in Sydney, while Northern Star Resources Ltd. climbed 2.1%. The gains came as broader equity benchmarks saw significant declines.
Among other main precious metals, silver was flat, while platinum fell 1.1% and palladium dropped 2.5%.

What Does the Future Hold for Commercial Robots?
Professional service robots exist because of meteoric technological developments. Robots were mostly expected to be found on the production floor in factories. These days, they are in the service industry and delivering packages to homes.
In a few years, robots will be used in mainstream applications. They will also be used increasingly in commercial places around the globe. Commercial robotics includes robots such as the following:
Drones
Field robots
Autonomous guided robots
Medical robots
The market for commercial robots is expected to grow swiftly in the next few years. In fact, by the year 2021, the market is expected to hit a value of $37 billion (International Federation of Robotics).
Logistics robots are expected to lead the pack followed closely by defense robots and exoskeletons. The demand for PR robots is set to rise. The future looks bright for professional service robots.
Technical Setbacks
There a few technical challenges that interfere with the efficient implementation of professional service robots. Some of these include:
Vision to facilitate navigation
Cognition in order to interact better with humans
Dexterity to enhance control
Vision to Facilitate Navigation
The next chapter of professional service robots may be committed to advancing vision software. This will enable robots to steer across the workplace. Consequently, the automation of non-factory tasks will increase profitability.
Dexterity to Enhance Control
In like manner, it is important for a robot to demonstrate dexterity. Commercial robots are not locked away behind cages. They are free to move around and interact with humans. As a result, there must be an element of control in order to protect the humans around the robots.
In addition, robots involved in household and agricultural tasks must be programmed to be gentle. They could easily damage the products and objects they work on. Hence, they should be able to see what they are working with and also to handle them gently.
Cognition to Interact Better
Cognition is also important because commercial robots often interact with humans one-on-one. Some of these robots are designed to perform tasks such as customer service. This involves interacting directly with humans; speaking with them and giving assistance.
Consequently, robotics is always coming up with innovative ways to improve these robots. Programming is complex and is constantly being enhanced. Commercial robots of the future are likely to have increasingly natural-like interactions with their human clients.
There may be a few technical issues to deal with but improvement is gradual and will be realized. There is no doubt that the professional robot of tomorrow will demonstrate improved capabilities.
Technological Enhancements in Commercial Robots
There are additional technological advancements that will help to solve some huge barriers affecting commercial robots. These advancements will ensure that commercial robots find a place in the mainstream.
These technological improvements include the following:
VSLAM (Visual Simultaneous Localization & Mapping)
This technology is mostly found in autonomous navigation. It allows the robot’s vision system to chart its surroundings and also find itself within those surroundings. VSLAM allows for path planning as well as autonomous navigation even in constantly changing environments.
Embedded Vision
This helps greatly with dexterity because a robot is able to stop operations if a human’s safety is threatened. It also helps robots to have a gentler grip in tasks such as food handling.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
AI as well as machine learning methods are utilized to train bots to work collaboratively with humans. The aim is to advance natural language processing for better human-robot interactions. Catching a human and a robot in conversation will be a normal sight.
Conclusion
Professional service robots will be an expected and common presence in non-factory industries. They will have advanced capabilities and will work well humans. With AI, humanoid robots and those engaged in PR can communicate reasonably with humans.
Moreover, they will be able to travel across the work floor without endangering the humans therein. Also, they will be able to handle delicate products better and help businesses to give better yields.
