They detained a tourist. Put him in a cell for more than 1 month.

He contracted Covid19 during detention.

This sounds like sheer incompetence.

It appears that this man was killed by the incompetence of our authorities.

Hiring based on race produces incompetence and corruption.

Our govt agencies seem to be rife with incompetence and corruption.

This is another sad case of that incompetence becoming lethal.

And as usual, when exposed, they want to sweep it under the carpet and hush it up.

What a wistful fairy tale of Malaysia's grand future--like Mahathir's failed Multimedia Corridor. In any case, 5.0 or Gen 5 has become a promotional catch phrase to describe just about any electronic product or, in the case of this article, grand strategy. In other words, a dubious advertising gimmick. My router connection says "Netgear 5G" but it's got nothing to do with a bona fide 5-G network. It's a 4-G (albeit fiber optic) network.

This same kind of thinking prevails in the Civil Service. They are not paid to think. Everyone who overstays, according to their book, is an illegal no matter what the prevailing circumstance. Just go to any public counter of any the government department. Those manning the counter are rude, insulting and inefficient with dealing with the public’s problem. They forget that they are there to help the Rakyat and not punish them for having problems.

Is this a joke?

You think those who protected Najib pre-GE14 and those who worked with UMNO after GE14....are in the same class of politicians as the good souls in PH?

Gentle sir/madam, you have spoken with true privilege, a general disregard for policy & reform, and simply to assuage your own uncomfortableness.

Was this same uncomfortableness present when Najib's supporters slapped someone on live TV?

Was this same uncomfortableness present when Shahidan Kassim walked away without a trial, while being charged with molest?

Do you have any idea of the injustices "one coalition" has brought against Malaysian people?

Nothing is stopping these politicians from simply "working together". Nothing. Has there been some new law that government MPs are barred from meeting and organizing with opposition MPs?

FYI......

The actual, genuine improvements (that PH utterly failed to implement):

1) True reform of MACC, the police, the IPCMC, and whistleblower laws. With these in place, it will matter much less which political party is in power.

2) Decentralized power away from the Prime Minister. Look at all the hub-hub in PH. They're drunk for power: they want to be "Najib but good this time". You can see this arrogance in Mahathir's eyes every time he speaks: he literally wants to be Najib with a better reputation. Anwar still somewhat, but less. They are like dogs waiting to grab 80% of the meat, while ignoring that it seems quite unfair that one position should hold 80% of political power. This means open-elections for PM candidates, this means PM take a back seat and instead work WITH their top-tier cabinet instead of ORDERING their mediocre cabinet

3) An anti-hopping ban & redrawn EC boundaries.

Nothing is stopping a single MP from fighting for these reforms. Not a single thing. All 222 of them are spineless: some are spineless for the rakyat, some are spineless for themselves. In the end, without a spine, we will move nowhere fast.

Please, spare us your "uncomfortableness": please instead be uncomfortable with injustice, with inequality, with corruption, with abuse of power, with aristocrats and the wealthy.

Or else you are simply planting the seeds for PN, MN, BN, and the upcoming HN, CN, TN, and LN coalitions.

PH failed this test immediately. They should've learned from Obama: if you only fight for reforms with 10% of your political will, the rich & elite will notice your failures and claw back from the depths of hell, i.e., Trump.

Trump was literally elected right after Obama. Such a simple lesson, yet even "internationally concerned Mahathir" looks like a mediocre simpleton who has never reformed a government.

Oh, wait, that's true.

It is what we called damage control. What else can he say? Nothing can adequately satisfy the Riza's deal and Musa Aman was not even brought to trial. Nobody believe the reason why they were being discharged or acquitted.

It makes UMNO looking bad but then that what UMNO is. He makes himself sound reasonable by acknowledging the good that Harapan did on freedom of speech while at the same time wants UMNO to change. Political statement by an UMNO apologist. He can do more if he is really sincere and start with Hannah Yeoh being questioned by the police for asking a legitimate question as an elected representative. He should condemn that because that was exactly what UMNO did and does.

Will Anwar make a good PM?
Thats the wrong question. The question should be, can Anwar draw the numbers to be PM? The answer is No.

Isnt Anwar better than Najib, Zahid, Hadi, and Moo?
Again, thats the wrong question. The question should be, is Anwar able to beat any of them? The answer is again No.

Even if Anwar is the most brilliant PM candidate ever, if he cannot attract politicians to him and he cannot attract Malay voters to him, he will not be PM.

That is reality.

PN politicians do not fear or respect Anwar.

Many Malay voters do not support Anwar.

As for Mahathir, like him or loathe him, the fact is PN fears Mahathir and Malay voters respect Mahathir.

Anwar supporters expect Mahathir to fight PN, and then hand Anwar the rewards on a silver platter. Get real. Why would he?

Perhaps Anwar might be a better, more ethical PM candidate.

But by now, we nonMalays should know, in Malaysia, capability and merit often have nothing to do with success. And it seems that applies to the job of PM too.

Just work it out and make it a legally binding agreement..... Mahathir as PM but for 6 months only, Anwar as DPM and when Anwar becomes PM, Mukhriz becomes DPM.

Just follow what Israel is doing..... after 3 bitter elections in 12 months and no parties have the outright majority, Netanyahu and Gantz are taking turns to share a rotating PM position.

This wouldn't be the first time the Malays copy, borrow or learn from the Jews!

Malaysia's latest stimulus package PENJANA includes childcare incentives, free internet

The government has introduced numerous measures to benefit individuals as part of the RM35 billion Economic Recovery Plan named PENJANA in short, that was announced by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today.

There is the introduction of a tax exemption of up to RM3,000 for fees paid by parents to nurseries for child care — up from RM2,000 previously — and RM800 eVouchers for the use of childcare services that are booked online, to be used from now till end-August.

These initiatives will be facilitated by the Ministry of Community and Women Development, together with the Inland Revenue Board.

To enable remote working and education under the new norm, Muhyiddin also announced 1GB of free internet for all users from 8am to 6pm every day, to surf educational web pages and to use video conferences applications, up until Dec 31, 2020.

"Besides that, all users will be able to access for free, without limit, government web pages and the government's Covid-19 application, in particular mySejahtera," Muhyiddin said when delivering his speech on PENJANA.

For e-wallet users

The government is also crediting RM50 into each e-wallet, matched by RM50 cash-back or discounts by e-wallet operators, to benefit 15 million Malaysians aged above 18, with annual income below RM100,000.

For single moms and the disabled

Meanwhile, the government is planning a one-off payment of RM300 to be given to 300,000 single moms and disabled listed under the Department of Social Welfare before Hari Raya Aidiladha.

For gig-economy workers

The government, which is in the midst of crafting a policy to support the growth of the gig economy and the welfare of those in this sector, is also allocating RM50 million in the form of matching grant for gig economy platforms to allocate social security contribution of up to RM162, and Employee Providend Fund contribution of up to RM250 per employee, per year.

Limitless public transport rides on RM30 per month

Separately, it will introduce a RM30 monthly public transport pass (Programme MY30) to be used for limitless rides on all public transportation under the purview of Prasarana in the Klang Valley.

The programme is open to all Malaysians and will take effect from June 15 until end-2020.

Additional allocation for B40 PEKA

On the healthcare front, the government plans to allocate an additional RM50 million for the B40 PEKA Scheme, to fund screening tests and medical equipment.

The B40 PEKA Scheme is the Skim Peduli Kesihatan for the B40 group, a government initiative under the Ministry of Health that aims to sustain the healthcare needs of low the country's income groups by focusing on non-communicable diseases.

There are several plausible reasons why COVID-19, which is spread primarily by respiratory droplets, has not resulted in more on-board transmission, and is different from other modes of public transport:

Passengers face forward with limited face-to-face interactions
Seats provide a barrier to transmission forward to aft in the cabin
Air flow from ceiling to floor further reduces the potential for transmission forward or aft in the cabin, moreover, air flow rates are high and not conducive to droplet spread in the same way as in other indoor environments
High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters on modern aircraft clean cabin air to operating theatre quality, further assisted by high levels of fresh air circulation
Moreover, even if implemented keeping the ‘middle seat’ open will not provide the recommended separation for social distancing to be effective. Most authorities recommend 1m-2m while the average seat width is less than 50 cm.

“The cabin environment naturally makes transmission of viruses difficult for a variety of reasons. That helps explain why we have seen little evidence of onboard transmission. In the immediate term, our aim is to make the cabin environment even safer with effective measures so that passengers and crew can return to travel with confidence. Screening, face coverings and masks are among the many layers of measures that we are recommending. Leaving the middle seat empty, however, is not,” said de Juniac.

The long-term solutions for COVID-19 depend on medical science.

“We need a vaccine, an immunity passport or an effective COVID-19 test that can be administered at scale. Work on all of these is promising. But none will be realized before we will need to re-start the industry. That’s why we must be ready with a series of proven measures, the combination of which will reduce the already low risk of inflight transmission. And we must be careful not to hard-wire any solution so we can be quick in adopting more efficient measures as they will undoubtedly become available,” said de Juniac

Economic Impact

Calls for social distancing measures on aircraft would fundamentally shift the economics of aviation by slashing the maximum load factor to 62%. That is well below the average industry breakeven load factor of 77%.

With fewer seats to sell, unit costs would rise sharply. Compared to 2019, air fares would need to go up dramatically—between 43% and 54% depending on the region—just to break even.

“Airlines are fighting for their survival. Eliminating the middle seat will raise costs. If that can be offset that with higher fares, the era of affordable travel will come to an end. On the other hand, if airlines can’t recoup the costs in higher fares, airlines will go bust. Neither is a good option when the world will need strong connectivity to help kick-start the recovery from COVID-19’s economic devastation,”

IATA Calls for Passenger Face Covering and Crew Masks

Geneva - The International Air Transport Association (IATA) supports the wearing of face coverings for passengers and masks for crew while on board aircraft as a critical part of a layered approach to biosecurity to be implemented temporarily when people return to traveling by air. IATA does not support mandating social distancing measures that would leave ‘middle seats’ empty.

Evidence suggests that the risk of transmission on board aircraft is low. Mask-wearing by passengers and crew will reduce the already low risk, while avoiding the dramatic cost increases to air travel that onboard social distancing measures would bring.

“The safety of passengers and crew is paramount. The aviation industry is working with governments to re-start flying when this can be done safely. Evidence suggests that the risk of transmission on board aircraft is low. And we will take measures—such as the wearing of face coverings by passengers and masks by crew—to add extra layers of protection. We must arrive at a solution that gives passengers the confidence to fly and keeps the cost of flying affordable. One without the other will have no lasting benefit,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

Measures to Reduce the already low risk of onboard transmission

IATA recommends mandatory face-coverings for passengers and masks for crew as one of several actions to reduce the already low risk of contracting COVID-19 on board aircraft.

In addition to face coverings, these layers of temporary biosecurity measures being proposed include:

Temperature screening of passengers, airport workers and travelers,
Boarding and deplaning processes that reduce contact with other passengers or crew,
Limiting movement within the cabin during flight,
More frequent and deeper cabin cleaning; and
Simplified catering procedures that lower crew movement and interaction with passengers.
When proven and available at scale, testing for COVID-19 or immunity passports could also be included as temporary biosecurity measures.

IATA does not recommend restricting the use of the ‘middle seat’ to create social distancing while onboard aircraft.

Evidence, although limited, suggests that, the risk of virus transmission on board aircraft is low even without special measures.
