What more can Najib do? Govt cannot afford the subsidies even after subsidy cut for petrol and a GST tax? That is because of tax cut for Corporations. Rich and corporation wants tax cuts don't want to pay their taxes for public services. Another stupid thing to do is Private sector building houses. Of course they are going to build the most expensive or as expensive they can to maximize profits. Depending on Private sector to build an affordable homes is stupid and a non starter.

Singapore owns all the land and build it on their own. Govt just need to buy a private developer then use its market power to lower cost and build affordable homes. There is huge demand but only Gucci and LV brands available. This is a supply side issue with all private companies Only want to build luxury homes.

Look at penang affordable homes projects prices ranging from 70,000 to 300,000. You tell me if Penang and even Singapore can do it why Malaysia cannot? If BN do this winning election is like walk in the park.

Drb partner with Geely upside remains to be seen. If Geely had controlling stake they would go all out in supporting Proton. Now its relationship is more like Daihatsu and Perodua. Instead of pouring investment into it like Volvo it will be like Perodua pay to rebadge.

There are also plenty to do before they reach Perodua standards. All suppliers QC will have to be verified and conform to standards. Massive reforms on Management and staff culture. This will take a couple years. The new model from Geely should have been a sedan rather than SUV. Sedan is still King in Malaysia. The SUV may help earnings but they need a People's Car like Myvi type to succeed.

For substance the main point of the artical means chinese passenger growth in china resulting in chinese airlines growing. But the article heading is bias implying that chinese are taking over or undercutting US business. The US preach free markets but when they are at the disadvantage suddenly undercutting US means its a crime but when they are making profits than it is free market.

@goldentriangle Oil price impacts is not as simplistic as you think. High oil price at this point means higher cost of business as transport prices go in tandem. All local businesses whether construction, plastic manufacturing, food and bev, consumer products all go up due to transport cost up. On export side as oil prices go up other than oil industry the main bulk of our exporting business is manufacturing electronics will go down because ringgit will go up. This net negative impact cycle on malaysian economy continues. Oil price will then need to be subsidized again because inflation risk will be too high. Consumer spending power will go lower and lower and it is not a pretty picture if we look like indonesia.

Najib made the agreement to let foreign funds back into malaysian market and guaranteed no capital control. Now we see exactly what happens when you let hot money run rampant. Previous rules and regulation worked well and stability was achieved but the cost is less profit for banks. Now banks achieve higher profit but stability is the cost. Now they blame it on NDF. Previous rules were a bedrock foundation to ensure money coming in are for genuine investment such as building factories and such now its all casino money.

When bill clinton was running for president he was bashing china right and left as well. What does it mean? It means Politicians will say anything and lie outright to get elected.

On China they are of no different from any other country and is no white knight SO is the US. Both are competing for economic superiority, power and influence. Malaysia was actually stupid to accept TPP in its current form. It does nothing on setting on a firm foundation on our economy but does wonders to US and Malaysian exporter's profits. Why is that bad? It creates no jobs or more specific create low paying jobs only. It then translates into low consumer spending power and relies on population growth and import of immigrants to support these industries. It also prevents us from entering the most profitable area which is medicine.

US and China are competing and our way of trying to benefit from both countries is pathetic. The best way should have been the german way which is "nothing for nothing and a penny does not get you much". The malaysian govt should have asked this most pertinent question. What did we get in return for what did we give up? Is it worth it?

Economic fundamentals are economic fundamentals. When the foundation is not firm not much can be build upon it. Short term benefits, short sightedness and self interest groups and so called elite blinded by quarter to quarter profits.

If you look at all the advance countries that are very stable on a very long term basis you will find 1) Science technology at the top level, 2) Education level at a very high level, 3) Domestic economy stable due to high consumer power. When economic wind blows they are very resilient because their foundation is build upon sailing on rough seas and smooth sailing upon good weather.

When you look at Malaysian policies most are pretty good but execution is never ever done because entrenched interest will never let it go. They want it to stay as it is because current system as it is now benefits them no matter the country's population nor the country's long term interest.

US govt is intent to get Najib and co and this smells rat. I believe US govt is trying to blackmail, intimidate and pressure Najib to do something for them. But do not get me wrong i also believe Najib and co has done what the US govt has alleged.

THe US is just as corrupt but they either make it legal to do so or has judges in their pocket to just rule in their favor. Najib is no better and less sophisticated use blunt force more. I just view this as local mafia vs overseas mafia and more powerful wanted to get more share of the profits.

kc55 The research conclusion is that GST is a regressive tax. Meaning its great if you are rich and bad if you are in the middle. The crux of the research is about regressive tax bad for the common folk not definition of middle class. The middle class classification they use is based on Bank Negara so as to demonstrate credibility and not figures pluck from the air. It does not claim nor justify that is the standard definition of middle class. Its research conclusion is basically critical of GST.

The diagnosis is correct, the solution is education is also correct but fail to point out that corporate taxes have been going down since reagan years but salary has not. Record profits for corporations while record drop in wages. Economic policies to put bluntly are DISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH. But in this case is distributing from the bottom earners to the top. Trickle UP instead of Trickle Down.

...Erm dear Mr KC chong as you yourself have said "It is easy to say that if I hold just Datasonic with all my money, I would have made 481%! ". Meaning nobody knows and im pretty sure not even Warren or do you mean to ask how to have this foresight?

Im not a pro all i know is so far knowing when to buy is much more important. The quantum of profit though tempting to maximize heck who doesn't however is beyond our control. So long as you quit while you are ahead you are a winner no?

Unless you hve inside information perhaps you can hold on longer and maximize more. "We are all players in this casino unless you are the House"

Dear Mr Khoon,

The economics behind is actually sound however as always the implementation of it leaves much to be desired.

Lets take a look at the Singapore side to try to understand the correlation. Though it is not exactly apple to apple the principle is very similar. Lee Kuan Yew was complaining in the 60s that Singaporeans were spending their discretionary income on Japanese akai radios, mercedes etc resulting in huge outflow of sing dollar that do not remain in Singapore domestic economy and benefits only Advance countries that have the technology to produce them. As a result to limit the outflows and to increase gov coffers to build infrastructures CPF was created and later COE for cars. What this does is instead of feeding fat cats from other countries the money remain within the country.

That is where Singapore got the money to build so many HDB at below market price early on and able to provide homes to almost everybody who...can work.

Malaysia was greedy and much corruption has seeped in the system. As you said Mr Khoon blind nationalism and racialism. Singapore use the money gained to further strengthen their economy, human capital, education, tech etc. Malaysia got AP Kings, monopoly kings that collects the rent and into own pocket.

Information asymmetry means its a zero sum game with the one having more information having the advantage is a no brainer.

NYSE is zig zagging and nervous due mostly to US economic data and some extent Ukraine. The GDP is not justifying the valuations of the companies hence everyone is hesitant to take long position and go only for companies that can deliver within or above expectations but still no long position as future earnings is the big question mark.

Malaysia just reported healthy GDP with all sectors growing especially electronic sector. MSCI just include inari, quarterly report indicates core business is growing above expectation with underperforming is the newly acquired Amertron. IF you believe Inari can fix this plus the favourable external factors in growing electronic sector then decide whether you are going long with this position of this stock.

No one will know what is in the operator mind but in most time best indicator is always growing quarterly earnings and favourable external factors that will ensure its delivery and hence the direction of the stock in the longer term.

Within this available information i will go for HOLD position with acquiring when there are dips in prices.
