Now, PPBM says BN’s ‘dacing’ illegal for GE14 race
Lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdullah says the 'white scales' logo is nowhere mentioned in BN's constitution.

PETALING JAYA: PPBM has questioned the legality of the white “dacing” (scales) symbol of Barisan Nasional (BN), saying it is not mentioned in the coalition’s constitution.

Haniff Khatri Abdullah.

“The emblem, badge and flag of Barisan Nasional are supposed to be a golden yellow scale on a royal blue background,” said PPBM lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdullah, referring to an article in the BN constitution.

“In the Barisan Nasional constitution, the emblem is described as being a golden yellow scale, not a white one.”

He said the constitution also does not specify the coalition’s official logo.

“Despite Barisan Nasional amending its party constitution several times, the latest of which was in 2013 under Prime Minister Najib Razak, none of those amendments to the constitution included a valid logo or symbol.”

As such, Haniff is accusing BN of violating Section 50 of the Societies Act 1966.

He also said the Election Commission (EC) should disqualify nomination forms from BN candidates on Apr 28.

He said BN candidates could only legally contest as independents with a logo provided by the EC, or use any component party logos except Umno’s.

Haniff said this was because “Umno itself is a null and void party” as it did not hold branch-level elections by Feb 28.

Haniff’s statement comes in the wake of bad blood between PPBM and RoS.

The party has accused the body of refusing to come clean on whether all four PH component parties could contest using the PKR logo in the coming elections.

The decision to use PKR’s logo followed a provisional deregistration order on PPBM by RoS early this month.

PH previously applied to use a common logo, hoping to go to the coming polls as a united coalition like BN. RoS has yet to approve the application.
