Iran was very close to USA during the ruling of Shah Iran. The US government under Jimmy Carter could avoid the Paris-based exiled Ayatollah Khomeini from capturing Iran but...

On November 4, a group of Iranian students took over the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.

Carter allowed the Shah who felt ill subsequent to the downfall of the kingdom, to travel to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York on October 22, 1979.

When the shah was overthrown, increasingly anti-American rhetoric came from Iran...until today.
Iran used to be a secular Muslim country and friendly to USA and now it has to de dealt by Israel carefully.

One thing which is giving mind-boggling to anyone is that the Western world would shelter or granting political asylum to your enemies/political opponents. These enemies as deemed by certain governments as the traitors to their motherland are basically living legally in the Europeans countries/USA.

For example, in Turkey, their government classified the movement by Fethullah Gulen as illegal but the group is allowed to survive. The movement can be used to undermine the country which is not in alliance with the Western world/USA.

The above sentence is from the article.

China prefer dialogue over confrontation and partnership over alliance.
There are clear differences among themselves.
Alliance is like NATO memberships where the rest are duty-bound/ought to come together and fight (war zone) for you whenever you are in dispute with another non-member country.
You are basically attracting others to join and to out-numbered the non-members especially on the aspect of military operation.

China has always been champagning the approaches with ways of "de-escalation", dialogues and cooperation whenever expressing the views on conflicts in other countries/between two countries. This way is better in resolving the dispute/conflict as compare to bringing in the "alliance" when dealing with another country.
