THE Government is paying less for the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Sinovac of China as the bottling process will be carried out in Malaysia, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

He said Pharmaniaga Bhd would be overseeing the bottling process for the vaccine, which is expected to be ready for distribution by the end of March.

Pharmaniaga Berhad is not owned by hedge funds. The company's largest shareholder is Boustead Holdings Berhad, with ownership of 56%, This implies that they have majority interest control of the future of the company. The second and third largest shareholders are Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT) and Che bin Wok Kamaruddin, holding 11% and 4.8%, respectively.

For a 50 percent effective vaccine? Wtf? That only 1 in 2 people protected. Are we a joke to the Malaysian Government?

The efficacy rate depends on how the clinical trials are conducted, hence why you'd get varying efficacy results. Bear in mind, both Pfizer's and AstraZeneca's vaccines also have had different efficacy results. Butantan opted for more extensive clinical pool sample criteria, hence why the rates are much lower.

I don't intend to insert any political remarks but given the current global situation where the whole world is striving to secure vaccine supply, I think Malaysia is doing a not so bad job. Let's just hope there are no hiccups and all Malaysians will have access to the vaccines.

The announcement may have been overshadowed by the emergency declaration. I guess the news will start picking up more soon. The Pfizer's vaccine, which will come in Feb, will be controlled by KKM - prioritizing severe cases and high-risk individuals (front liners, medical professionals, etc.). The Sinovacs, while a portion would also be prioritized for KKM's discretion (for disbursement to areas with logistical and cold storage challenges), is currently the only choice available for the public.

Come Feb and Mar, when the infected rates are expected to be higher, I'm anticipating more momentum.

Any possibility of local pharmas getting involved for Astra Zeneca vaccine distribution? I know for Pfizer they control the start to end distribution due to extreme temperature storing requirements, but for AZ the requirements are less extreme
