For retailers like us, we should just do homework and decide if the company can be invested.
Accumulate on low price.

MAS’ 2Q13 passenger load factor surged by 6.6ppts YoY to 80.4%
cargo load factor increased by 1.5ppts YoY to 72.8%
(Overall increase load factor uo to 77.9% and even higher compared to Singapore airlines for the compared period)

Total revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) climbed 13.3% q-o-q and 29.3% y-o-y
Total available seat kilometers (ASK) grew 7.8% q-o-q and 18.7% y-o-y.
Oneworld alliance also helped lift MAS’ international passenger RPK by 12.3% q-o-q and 30.1% y-o-y.

Current NTA (Net tangible assets) = .52 cents a share so if MAS sell all assets, then still worth a .52 cent company... (there is still 150 mil of non-tangible assets in books as of 31 march 2013)

So current price is still lower valuations for this company. Time will tell when the company turnaround. Advantage of GLC company is that they have longer time to turnaround. Look at SIME when the major loss from bakun but now their stock price has recovered.

2nd half for aviation usually shows better results, so let's wait and see the 2Half results. See if more gains for MAS.. if yes, then it's can be a point of turnaround.. They expanding routes and hiring temp workers(that not bound to MAS union) would be cost effective to grow... up to individual investor to decide.

@ metalmonk - yes if MAS turnaround the share will go up, but the questions are:
1. You say time will tell, so exactly when? Will anyone have to patience to wait for the unknown?
2. Turnaround required either because of few factors, namely macro factor: aviation industry or micro, company itself, change in management. Macro, aviation has not been doing extremely well, especially the traditional full frills airlines. That's hard to forecast, but on the micro, has the management have what it takes to turn it around?
3. Last question, what is the trade off cost BETWEEN INVESTING YOUR TIME ON ANALYZING MAS & ANALYZING SOME SOUNDLY MANAGED COMPANIES THAT ARE GOING UPTREND?

Car racing are always more exciting to watch when the driver managed to pull off a drift from that small dirt road snaking the edge of the cliff, compare to a car running alone on a super huge empty road. But who will you choose?
