What's happening in Utusan? Does the paper accord the same journalistic treatment to other products and advertisers or is it just targeting and being hard only on the GLCs? Poser over Utusan’s GLC bashing ShareThis Posted on 07/11/2013 - 20:00 Hazlan Zakaria PETALING JAYA: Media monitor Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) has questioned Malay-daily Utusan Malaysia's editorial bent in its recent articles seen as bashing government-linked companies (GLCs) for not taking more advertisements in Malay language newspapers. "I can't say with certainty... what's happening in Utusan, but it made me ask this question: does Utusan accord the same journalistic treatment to other products and advertisers or is it just targeting and being hard only on the GLCs?" said CIJ chief executive Masjaliza Hamzah. Masjaliza was commenting on reports accusing Utusan of GLC bashing which may conflict with its objectivity as the daily itself is one of the Malay newspapers it complains of being given the short end of the advertising stick by the corporations involved. Indeed, Utusan was at the centre of controversy when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had said during a speech officiating at the daily's new building that GLCs and government departments should advertise more in the paper to help it make ends meet. The Prime Minister's Department, however, backtracked slightly in a parliamentary answer recently, explaining that the prime minister just wants GLCs and departments to advertise in mainstream media to reach more of the rakyat with policy explanations. The matter puts a tinge on its editorial objectivity, in the context of Utusan’s tiffs with an oil and gas GLC over lack of contracts to Malay contractors and a leading budget airline over its official’s criticisms of the paper’s alleged right-wing stand. She said that the decision to send reporters to write about any issue or to publish any article in any media must chiefly depend on the news-worthiness of the issue and public interest in it. "So, if there are any exposés on wrongdoings in any GLC, it is logical for it to make the front page in a newspaper or is the main breaking news story with multiple follow-ups for online news portals." In fact, she said that if it doesn't make the front page, readers need to ask why because it is clearly a matter of public interest. Masjaliza also contended that media reporting on news by companies which potentially are its advertisers is not wrong, but cautioned that this is in context of having strong journalistic practice and editorial direction in place. "What goes against principles of journalism is when the reports are factually unsound, unfair and inaccurate.” “The decisions to run them are based on advertising concerns and influenced by the advertising department in the media, rather than journalistic reasons," she said. As for Utusan being a "champion" for the Malays, she believed that this must be taken with a healthy dose of salt against the backdrop of the daily's professed role as a bastion of journalism and nation building. "While the readers may be predominantly Malay, if Utusan calls itself a newspaper rather than a newsletter for the Malay community or for Umno, then it should practise journalism, which means fair treatment on all issues for all parties.” Utusan should not forget that it is in Bahasa Malaysia, which is a national language, and in theory, should serve the interest of all Malaysians," said Masjaliza. http://www.theantdaily.com/news/2013/11/07/poser-over-utusans-glc-bashing

Money doesn’t work, nor do free chicks, says Dr M of Sungai Limau and current politics

Election goodies offered by political parties can no longer ensure victory, said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, citing Monday’s Sungai Limau by-election as an example.

"Maybe I'm wrong (and I admit I am often wrong) but cash handouts and gifts will not ensure victory," he said in his latest Chedet.ccblog posting.

He noted that this is the irony of current politics for Barisan Nasional (BN).

“This is the current politics. They have a lot of money but still not enough influence,” the former and longest serving premier said.

"This is evident from GE13. Those who did not support, did not support. The money given was a waste, whether government money or otherwise.”

PAS claimed in the run-up to the Sungai Limau ballot that BN had spent at least RM15.5 million of taxpayers’ money.

Dr Mahathir observed that campaigning these days was different from yesteryears where “a lot of money was being spent now”.

"There are carnivals and all sorts of entertainment, feasts and free gifts such as BN t-shirts. Even PAS, though not in power, had to sell t-shirts. When they form the government, surely the t-shirts will be free," he said in his signature sarcastic style commenting on the Sungai Limau by-election.

He highlighted that a government department organised an exhibition to promote the Agriculture Ministry.

"Those who visited the exhibition were given ten chicks and rice. Food was also provided.

"I do not know if this was part of BN's campaign. If it was, clearly visitors were not taken in with the offer of free chicks.

"In fact, voters do not vote for gifts – whether in the form of money or chicks."

On Sunday, the eve of polling day, BN organised a shopping-like carnival in Bukit Besar, located 19km from Alor Star. It was packed as word spread that household essentials were being sold well below market prices.

Although the BN government recently removed the sugar subsidy that caused the price to go up, a 1kg packet of sugar cost RM1 at the carnival. For comparison, after the subsidy was removed the 1kg packet retailed at RM2.84.

A 5kg bag of rice, usually sold between RM18 and RM20, cost RM5 at the carnival.

Dr Mahathir added that support for a political party is based on its struggle and the attitude of its leaders and candidates.

"If they arrive in a Mercedes or 1000cc motorcycle, whatever prizes offered will not capture their hearts. There are voters who are not aware who will say it is a bribe. This is their wrong perception. And even though it is not a bribe, how they view it will influence their actions," he wrote.

Dr Mahathir said in Sungai Limau there were now many brick homes, adding that this was a big improvement from when he was the wakil rakyat in the 1960s.

"Many in the kampung have succeeded and have money, although they are not rich.

"But many are still poor, very poor. Should they be given the opportunity and help, they would probably move on. And BN will probably be held up high again.”

In Monday’s polls, PAS candidate Mohd Azam Abdul Samat defeated BN’s Dr Ahmad Sohaimi Lazim with a majority of 1,084 votes. Last May, the late Tan Sri Azizan Razak won the seat with a 2,774-vote majority in a four-cornered fight. – November 8, 2013.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s allegations of money politics had drawn the ire of several Umno supreme council members, who said it was an insult to some 146,000 delegates who had voted during the party polls last month.

If his allegations are true, how can this unethical practice of buying votes be controlled?

Investigate Gani for any wrongdoing, don’t badmouth him, says former AG Abu Talib

Those who have any evidence of criminal wrongdoing by Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail must be responsible enough to lodge police reports and stand by the allegations made, says one of his predecessors.

Tan Sri Abu Talib Othman (pic, left) said it was pointless congregating at someone's house and badmouthing the individual without pursuing further action.
