The death toll rose on Tuesday morning as rescuers reached affected areas. Gansu authorities said 113 people had died in the province, with 397 people injured. Qinghai reported 13 dead, 182 injured, and 20 still missing.

It is the deadliest earthquake in China since the 2010 Yushu quake hit Gansu and Qinghai, which measured 6.9 and killed at least 2,698 people.

State media characterised the rescue effort as a “race against time” because of a cold wave sweeping across China. The high-altitude area where the earthquake hit reported temperatures of -14C on Tuesday morning.

“Based on past rescues, the biggest difficulty of this operation is the local low temperature,” said Wang Duo, a team leader from the Gansu Houtian disaster rescue centre, according to China News Weekly.

RESCUERS dug through rubble for a second freezing day today after overnight temperatures plunged well below zero, with the death toll in China’s deadliest earthquake in years rising to 131.

State broadcaster CCTV said at least 113 people were killed in north-western Gansu province and 18 more in neighbouring Qinghai after a shallow tremor on Monday night damaged thousands of buildings.

It was not immediately clear whether the search in Qinghai had ended or not.

In Gansu, more than 207,000 homes were wrecked and nearly 15,000 houses collapsed, affecting more than 145,000 people. More than 128,000 emergency supply items including tents, quilts, tent lights and folding beds, were delivered while food such as steamed buns and instant noodles were provided to the victims.

In Qinghai's quake-hit Haidong, Du Haiyi said his family home had been completely levelled.

The 21-year-old told Reuters he had managed to save his mother and 16-year-old sister, who were trapped under debris the night of the quake.

"My parents were pulled out from underneath this, but I don't know how," Du said. "We ran to wherever we could."

Braving sub-zero cold, rescuers on Wednesday pulled to safety victims of an earthquake that rocked a remote area in China's northwestern Gansu province, while survivors faced months of uncertainty ahead without permanent shelter.

The magnitude 6.2 earthquake jolted Jishishan county near the border straddling Gansu and Qinghai provinces a minute before midnight on Monday, sending frightened residents out of homes into the cold in the dead of the night. Roads, power and water lines and agricultural production facilities suffered damage, and the quake triggered land and mudslides.

In Gansu, 113 people had been found dead as of 9 a.m. on Wednesday (0100 GMT) and 782 were injured, authorities said. The death toll in neighbouring Qinghai rose to 21 with 186 injured and 13 missing as of 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
Seventy-eight people have been found alive in Gansu, where rescue operations ended on Tuesday afternoon, Chinese media said, as the focus shifted to treating the wounded and resettling residents as a months-long winter loomed.

China detractors/haters like to inflate figures but no one believes them. Qinghai has a small population of under 6 million. It is more likely that 3,600 buildings have collapsed due to the quake. 360,000 homes in Gaza might have been destroyed due to Israel's bombings and missile strikes.

I like a china with Mao picture in Beijing.

It's shows a great country with self confidence. Shows the forgiving nature of Chinese for the greater good. That unity trumps all. That the great helmsman must be honoured. That dead men can still serve China. Chinese can accept the fallibility of men , no man is perfect but on balance mao deserves to be honoured. That China has eyes fixed on the future and what is good for China , that Mao is still loved very much especially in poorer regions of China. That Russia made a big mistake in removing statures of Stalin. That China values inclusiveness that because man is fallible, in order to evaluate a person's true worth, the intentions are important considerations, the achievements must be celebrated and not just focus on the negatives.

I think it's a good culture to value the positives and just focus on the negatives. After all man is not infallible. It's important for the future of China and important for unity that the great helmsman birthday is celebrated...Mao has made great contributions to China and that cannot be ignored
