KUALA LUMPUR: Unisem (M) Bhd posted a pre-tax loss of
RM8.242 million for the second quarter ended June 30, 2012 against a pre-tax profit of RM11.818 million registered in the same period last year.

The semiconductor assembly and test services company said its revenue declined to RM282.945 million, during the period under review, from RM307.517 million recorded previously, following the revenue decline in Asia, Europe and US segments.

In an announcement to Bursa Malaysia, the company said sentiment in the semiconductor industry had deteriorated in recent months due to uncertainty and bearishness in the global economy.

"The operating environment is expected to remain challenging for the remaining period till the end of the financial year.

"The initiatives taken by the group to right size our headcount and tweak our package portfolio will continue and we expect to incur some costs associated with the implementation of this new business model in the next few quarters," it said.

Unisem also said its new business model would progressively improve the profitability and sustainability of the group, going forward. -- BERNAMA
