He began his career as an Assistant Director of Economic Planning Unit (EPU) in the Prime Minister's Department in June 1994 before pursuing his Diploma in Public Administration at INTAN in 1995. He re-joined EPU in March 1996 and thereafter moved to the then Anti Corruption Agency of Malaysia in April 1998 until March 2003. 

He later pursued his studies in Japan and upon his return in 2006, served as Administrator and Diplomatic Officer in the Public Service Department from December 2003 until April 2006. In May 2006, he was appointed as Principal Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Finance (MOF) and held several other positions including Deputy Under Secretary, Investment, Minister of Finance (Incorporated) and Privatisation Division, in the Social and Commercial sectors respectively. Asri was appointed the Under Secretary, Government Investment Companies Division, MOF since July 2015.
