Kuantan Port

Kuantan Port Consortium Sdn Bhd (Kuantan Port) is 60 : 40 owned by IJM Corporation Berhad and Beibu Gulf Holding (Hong Kong) Co. Ltd.

Established in 1974 under the Kuantan Port Authority, Kuantan Port has come a long way since its inception. With full operations commencing in 1984, it has emerged as the port of choice in the South China Sea region, steadily gaining prominence over the years. In 1998, Kuantan Port underwent privatisation to Kuantan Port Consortium Sdn Bhd.

After nearly four decades of successful operation, the ambitious idea to expand the port took shape in 2013. Fast forward to today and Kuantan Port has transformed into two ports – Kuantan Port 1 and the New Deep-Water Terminal (NDWT), with the latter commencing its first phase of operation in 2018. Kuantan Port 1 boasts a maximum 12-metre draught, allowing it to accommodate vessels of up to 55,000 deadweight tonnes. It is equipped to handle various types of cargo, including containers, and has become a hub of versatility in port operations.

NEW DEEP WATER TERMINAL (NDWT)

After nearly four decades of successful operation, the ambitious idea to expand the port took shape in 2013. In 2013, the Government announced that Kuantan Port was embarking on a mega expansion project, the New Deep Water Terminal (NDWT). The expansion project construction work commenced in April 2015.

The Kuantan Port New Deep Water Terminal has two phases; its first phase was completed and commenced operation in 2018 for Phase 1A and 2019 for Phase 1B. The NDWT, with its 16-metre depth, is a game-changer for Kuantan Port. Capable of accommodating vessels of up to 180,000 deadweight tonnes, three times larger than Kuantan Port 1. Currently, NDWT cargo handling makes up to approximately 7 million tonnes of cargo per year. It primarily focuses on dry bulk and break-bulk cargoes in its first phase and is designed to operate with semi-automation, requiring minimal workforce compared to Kuantan Port 1.

In tandem with the escalating economic development of the Eastern Industrial Corridor, Kuantan Port is expanding its operations to double its cargo capacity to 52 millions freight weight tonnes with the construction of a New Deep Water Terminal (NDWT).

The NDWT can cater bigger ships and higher traffic. This facilities will be able to accommodate bulk carriers of up to 200,000 DWT (Deadweight Tonnage) and container ships of up to 18,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit).

Kuantan Port could benefit from ECRL completion long-term prospects for Kuantan Port look promising with increased investments into Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park (MCKIP) which will benefit from better connectivity once the ECRL is completed in end-26. Throughput is anchored by Alliance Steel, which plans to raise capacity from 3.5 mil tonnes p.a. to 10 mil tonnes p.a. Kuantan Port made RM150m in pretax profit in FY24 (+343% yoy), lifted by a 15% increase in throughput to 26.2 mil FWT (Freight Weight Tonnes)  and a tariff hike in April 2023. Our revised DCF value for Kuantan Port is RM1.1 bil (IJM 60% stake, WACC 8%, average throughput growth of 4% until 2045F). The concession period may be extended for a further 30 years beyond 2045 if it fulfils Phase 2 development of the New Deep Water Terminal by Dec 2039. It also has 1,080 acres of industrial land in MCKIP where 640 acres is earmarked for a mixed development and logistics hubs.
