Would a bridge between Melaka and Sumatra bring economic benefits, or is it more likely to become another white elephant? We get reactions to the proposal from economist Dr. Timothy Wong of the National University of Singapore (NUS)

A non-starter given the geological instability of frequent earthquakes and tsunamis; neither are these 2 areas huge economic hubs with multibillion trade and heavy tour traffic. A bridge would need to be high enough for supertankers and container vessels to pass through and a tunnel will incur exorbitant construction and maintenance costs. It would be analogous to the folly of the flying car projects mooted years ago!!
