Getting around on an e-scooter, whether you own it or are just renting it, can be a dangerous affair when the weather's bad.

The wheels don't always have the best traction, so when you're trying to brake on a wet or slippery surface, be sure to use both the front and rear brakes - if you have both, of course - to avoid losing control, advises DVR, a German advisory board for vehicle safety.

Never brake abruptly, or else you risk falling over. It's better to feel it out when braking. "For more grip and stability on wet or damp ground, kneel down a bit and position one foot behind the other, with a wide distance between them," advises the DVR's Julia Fohmann.

In general, you should have a longer braking distance when the ground is slippery. Obviously this also means reducing your speed and driving very cautiously, especially when going around a curve.

The contact surfaces between the brakes could also get damp or wet - braking with a light grinding action can help drive away the moisture.
