Riding an eScooter can be difficult even on the driest of days, so why would you chance getting on one when the streets are slippery and wet?

With their smaller wheels, eScooters aren’t especially suited for taking on adverse weather conditions. Which is precisely why Germany’s leading technical inspection association Tuev recommends avoiding one in such scenarios in the first place.

If you insist on riding one in such conditions, the DVR, a German advisory board for vehicle safety, recommends using both the front and rear brakes - if you have them - to avoid losing control.

The best way to ride an eScooter is to stand as far back as possible with your knees slightly bent, says Germany’s ADAC car association.

Additionally, don’t brake abruptly, reduce your speed and drive very, very cautiously if you want to avoid tipping over into the street.

In many places, it’s recommended that eScooters use only cycling paths or roads, and riders should be at least 14 years old. Under no circumstances should there be more than one rider per eScooter.

And while it might not be mandatory, the experts also recommend wearing a helmet when you’re riding an eScooter as well.

Tuev is especially strict when it comes to alcohol, saying that anyone who’s had even a little bit should avoid an eScooter.
