The smell of fresh ink on paper, folding an origami swan, leafing through old journals: For those of us out there who both appreciate stationary and play video games, Papetura may well be the gaming highlight of the year.

This puzzle game is a simple point & click adventure with one fascinating twist: It all takes place in a world made of paper.

And not just pretend paper - real paper. The game world was created entirely out of footage of paper constructions. It's all quite artfully done and also unique in this highly digitised era.

You control a small paper character named Pape, who has to find his way through the game scenes, solve several puzzles and escape fire-breathing monsters.

The paper world you lead him through meanwhile means you are constantly looking at ever-more complex structures and fascinating lighting effects.

The narrative also unfolds through the use of sounds in the game, while the story develops in the impressive background music.

Papetura has no dialogue at all. When you meet other paper creatures, Pape communicates in a kind of sign language that is supported exclusively by sounds and music. And yet on those rare occasions that there is a conversation, it's surprisingly easy to follow.

Pape, Tura and all the other companions and creatures you discover in the course of the game are animated digital versions of real paper models.

This and the characteristic look of different shades of orange in the game make "Papetura" a small work of art. The way the game plays with light and shadow and translucent paper is not only beautiful, but often also part of the game mechanics.

Despite the threat of the fire-breathing monsters, "Papetura" creates a relaxed game atmosphere.

It's almost like sitting at home with a cup of tea and a book by the fireplace.

And to make sure you don't go insane trying to find the solution to these occasionally difficult puzzles, you can always get a quick solution on request.

The puzzle adventure Papetura is available for around 10 euros on the Steam and GOG platforms for Windows and Mac.
