Qlik has closed its acquisition of Talend, tying together two data analytics and visualizion vendors backed by private equity biz Thoma Bravo.

The resulting combined company will be led by CEO Mike Capone, formerly CEO of Qlik. Christal Bemont, former Talend CEO, left earlier this year during the take-over process as an interim management team took charge. Finacials of the deal were not disclosed.

In a pre-canned statement, Capone claimed: “Qlik's broad expertise in data integration, analytics, AI and machine learning combined with Talend's data integration and data quality solutions, will provide customers the most comprehensive solution in the industry.”

In January, Qlik confidentially filed paperwork with US regulators for an initial public offering return to public markets, roughly six years after its private equity buyout. The company said it continued to "monitor the market conditions" regarding its IPO plans.

Qlik was founded in 1993 in Sweden. It was one of a group of vendors, which included Tableau and Talend, which spotted a gap in the market for desktop visualization tools. In August 2016, Thoma Bravo executed a private equity buyout of Qlik for $3 billion six years after its initial IPO. In 2019, CRM giant Salesforce bought Tableau for $15.7 billion.

Qlik claims to support 40,000 customers in over 100 countries, with global firms including Airbus, Ford and Deloitte among its accounts. Its big pitch is that combining data analytics with automation can allow automated decision-making.

"Most cloud vendors, what they're really trying to do is grab all your data. All the hyperscalers are saying, 'Give us all your data' and that's how they make their money. They charge you by compute or storage, and we don't: we provide outcomes, we sell analytics," Capone told The Register last year.

In a prepared statement, Mike Leone, Enterprise Strategy Group analyst said: “By marrying Qlik’s existing presence in the data integration space with Talend, customers will see more robust data integration capabilities and powerful data governance to deliver the confidence and trust they desire.”

Talend counts AstraZeneca, Lenovo and drinks company ABInBev among its customers. It appointed Bemont as CEO in 2020, after which the former SAP Concur executive joked to The Register that recruiters found her harder to get hold of than God. Perhaps now they will have a little more hope. ®
