BERLIN: Apple is launching versions of its video editing software Final Cut Pro and its music suite Logic Pro adapted for the iPad.

For both apps, the company promises a completely revised user interface that takes into account the possibilities of multi-touch operation of tablets.

In Final Cut Pro, this includes a new, virtual jog wheel that can be used to navigate through the timeline for single-frame editing. There's also a Live Drawing function, which allows you to draw or write directly over video content with the Apple Pencil.

And via Pro camera mode, you can record videos directly with the tablet camera in portrait or landscape format if required. Sharpness, exposure and white balance can be directly controlled manually.

Meanwhile in Logic Pro, not only can existing recordings and audio tracks be mixed. The app also provides software instruments, effects, beat machines and synthesisers that can be operated via multitouch, even for editing samples.

In addition, there is a full-fledged mixer with channel strips, volume faders and more.

Logic Pro displays all available instruments, patches, presets, samples and loops in a new central location, the so-called Sound Browser.

One practical feature is that a preview of each sound can be played back at the tap of a finger before you load it into a project.

With the iPad microphones, Logic Pro can of course also record voices or instruments if you prefer, and the iPad Pro even has five studio-quality microphones that can make for passable recordings.

Apple plans to release both apps on May 23 on a subscription basis.

Unlike Final Cut Pro's desktop version, which can be bought outright, the iPad version, like Logic Pro, costs US$5 or €5 (around RM22) per month. You can also but it annually for US$49 or €49 (around RM222).

It runs on any tablet with iPadOS 16.4 or higher, although Final Cut Pro requires at least an M1 processor in the iPad and Logic Pro at least an A12 Bionic processor.
