A new data transfer tool will soon make it much easier to transfer content from Google Photos to iCloud Photos.

The Data Transfer Initiative (DTI) has announced the launch of a new tool developed jointly by Apple and Google, enabling Google Photos users to transfer all their photos and videos directly to iCloud Photos. The aim is to facilitate data portability while ensuring security and confidentiality.

The Data Transfer Initiative (DTI) is an open-source project designed to optimise data portability between several online platforms. It is supported by Google, Apple, Facebook and Microsoft.

This new tool will be deployed worldwide during the week of July 15. It will enable you to request the transfer of a copy of your photos and videos from Google Photos to iCloud, without them being deleted from Google Photos.

There's no need to download all these files, as the transfer is made directly from service to service. The option will appear in Google Takeout, the tool that lets you export Google data for backup purposes.

Simply choose “Apple - iCloud Photos” as the destination for your photos and videos to launch the operation. You'll receive a notification when the transfer is complete. Depending on the amount of data to be transferred, the process can take up to several hours.

This measure complements the already available option of transferring images from iCloud Photos to Google Photos, thus ensuring reciprocity. In fact, to transfer your iCloud Photos files to Google Photos, you can already go to privacy.apple.com, select "Transfer a copy of your data" and follow the on-screen instructions. You'll receive an initial email notification of your transfer request, followed by another when the process is complete.

As summer vacations approach, it's important to remember to back up your photos online, whatever platform you choose.
