Najib on a Knife Edge - The Wall Street Journal
Malaysia's PM faces a struggle to stay in power.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak dissolved parliament Wednesday, setting the stage for the country's 13th general election, probably at the end of the month. According to the constitution the polls could be held no later than June 27, so Mr. Najib's move was no surprise. The fact that he waited as long as he did is one of many signs that the Prime Minister faces a struggle to stay in power.
Part of the challenge comes from within his own party. After five decades in power, the United Malays National Organization is riddled with corruption and complacency. In the 2008 election, Mr. Najib's predecessor Abdullah Badawi barely held on to a parliamentary majority, and afterward the opposition almost succeeded in tempting enough MPs to cross the aisle to form a new government.

That set the stage for Mr. Najib to take over the party leadership and premiership in 2009. He shored up his coalition by pursuing a program of economic and political reforms that tackled many of the issues that the opposition championed in 2008. This government deserves credit for responding to the public's dissatisfaction with corruption, lack of domestic competition and repressive laws left over from the colonial period.
However, these reforms were limited, and while they were good for the country, they may not translate into a victory for Mr. Najib. The population is young and increasingly urban, and many of these voters think the pace of reform has been too slow, especially in reforming the system of affirmative action for the ethnic majority Malays. Meanwhile, the Malays out in the villages who benefit most from the preferences and cash handouts find the changes threatening.
The conservative Malay constituency is well represented by nationalist politicians within UMNO, including Home Minister Hishamuddin Hussein and Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. Both are potential challengers for Mr. Najib's position, so it's no coincidence that his policies have been undermined from within the party.
The opposition coalition has its own cohesion problems that will probably come to the fore if it wins this election. But it has done a creditable job of ruling the four states under its control, undermining the government's argument that only it has the chops to keep Malaysia stable and growing.
Malaysia's system of holding back the dynamic Indian and Chinese minorities has turned it into a bastion of mediocrity in a fast-growing region. The country's best and brightest leave because the cronyism and racial quotas in education and employment hold them back.
Mr. Najib probably recognizes the need to move faster, but he can't afford to alienate his Malay base. In the coming weeks, UMNO's list of candidates will tell the electorate much about internal party politics. If the Prime Minister doesn't move aggressively to sideline the Malay nationalists and put his own reformers in place, voters may reasonably conclude that it's time to give the opposition its chance to overcome Malaysia's feudal past. A competitive economy ultimately demands plural politics.

Hey dumb shits, as of March 8 2013, BN's 5 year term has expired. Therefore, he is no longer our elected PM, and has no right to legislate policy or to dish out multi-billion ringgit projects. If that does not deserve to be called 'bastard', then something is wrong with your head. It's blatant vote buying. In developed democracies, he will be prosecuted.

The atmosphere was electric at Stadium Putra Bukit Jalil today as BN told Malaysians that it will dish out more cash if the nation votes them back into power.
In its manifesto launched tonight, BN said the Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) welfare aid will be raised from the current RM500 to RM1,200 per family, for households earning less than RM3,000 a month.
A raise was also promised for low-income single individuals, making it RM600 from the present RM250, BN chief Najib Abdul Razak said to roaring applause by 15,000-odd BN supporters at the stadium in Bukit Jalil.

GST will surely be implemented after GE13 by BN to cover BR1M & other 1Msia handouts. So whatever l get now is little compare to what I m going to pay for GST. So l m not too happy eventhough l got BR1M from BN. Even RM1200 given out yearly after GE13 to cover GST is not even enough for 1 whole year. In 2014 after GST is implemented then even the person who get BR1M RM 1200 yearly also will wake up to demonstrate against the government. Just WAIT &SEE whether what I said here is true or false. As a Bumi, l already wake up to this political drama of BR1M handouts. It is better to give equal chance to bumi to compete for tenders than to give BR1M to Msian but apply policies of cronisme of the RULING ELITE. Bumi are very angry of political cronisme policies. The mass majority of Bumi are not ignorant of the political elite enriching themselves & then give peanuts to the mass majority of Bumi.

To Zuliana: I still remember reading an article about a Malay lady returning from UK, and hoped to excel in her career in Malaysia, backed by her brilliant performance in UK. She ended up leaving her homeland again and returned to UK, reason being: Even she had performed excellently, still the score she got is: Because she is Malay that gains the "Privilege" (and not about her capability).
It's now we all Malaysians truly make this nation back on Right Path, to mutually grow and progress, with all resources God so generously grants us in this land. Or we will forever wash away brilliant people regardless of Malay, Chinese, Indian... While we still have Time... and Now is the Time. UBAH!

Of course, have to look good, it would be better after the election when GST is implemented. The promise to distribute more money up to RM1200. Yeah hip2 hoorey by distribution of cash we will be high income economy. Why dun BN set up a welfare system like in western country. Pay dough to Malaysia citizens who are jobless, pension and health benefits for those who are old and retired. BN convinced us you are serious and give permanently welfare benefits.

When you get your ballot paper, make sure there are NO MARKINGS made on it. If the SPR kerani wants to play funny tricks, all they need to do is to pre mark the paper (a dirty smudge or dot) and if you don't 'pangkah the same calon, its considered a spoilt vote.
Be observant, be careful and be brave enough to say 'tukar' when you know you are being cheated.

Misleading banners have been found in Selangor bearing the DAP and PAS flags, but were not issued by either party. So far, 50 banners have already been identified and taken down by Pakatan. They condemn the act and urge the public to keep a look out for suspicious banners.
