SEOUL (Sept 8): CelcomDigi Bhd inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Friday with South Korean technology company VIRNECT for the development and commercialisation of industrial extended reality solutions in Malaysia.

The collaboration aims to explore the development of experiential learning and education using the metaverse for multiple Malaysian universities.

Under the MOU, both organisations will collaborate in the co-creation of industrial virtual learning programmes that are reimagined using the metaverse and artificial intelligence (AI)-based solutions.

CelcomDigi chief executive officer Datuk Idham Nawawi said the company is committed to bringing the best innovation that will greatly benefit the development of Malaysian industries by utilising the real values of 5G technology.

"This strategic collaboration underscores our position of leveraging the metaverse, 5G and AI technology to potentially establish innovative and productive digital solutions for Malaysian enterprises, spurring Malaysia’s digital ecosystem into a new era of digital leadership,” he said at the signing event on Friday.

The MOU was signed between Idham and the CEO of VIRNECT, Tim Ha, and witnessed by Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil on the sidelines of the GSMA Mobile 360 APAC conference here.

Commenting on the collaboration, Fahmi said it will spur the adoption of 5G in Malaysia in the application of the metaverse, internet connectivity among consumers and industry players, as well as educational institutions.

"For example, the use of this technology will change the learning method in universities to experiential learning, especially in the fields of health, oil and gas engineering, robotics, and cybersecurity," he told Bernama.

CelcomDigi via its Innovation Center aspires to build the nation’s most inspiring innovation ecosystem by teaming up with VIRNECT and XRA, VIRNECT’s local partner and support team in Malaysia.

It aims to deliver strategic initiatives by leveraging the capabilities of cutting-edge metaverse and AI-based technology solutions in higher learning institutions in Malaysia.
