DESPITE being barred from entering the Parliament, Opposition MPs congregated near Dataran Merdeka and marched towards the august house.

While the leaders may have differences of opinion on certain issues, this time around, they agreed on one thing; Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yassin has to resign!

Earlier today, the police cordoned off entry to the Parliament building following Opposition MPs decision to show up, despite Dewan Rakyat proceeding today being postponed due to COVID-19 scare.

Speaking near Dataran Merdeka, Langkawi MP Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad accused the Perikatan Nasional Government of having scant respect to the rule of law, adding its leaders were only interested in holding on to power.

“They have no respect for due process. What kind of Government do we have here? I hope the people see this and reject the ‘backdoor’ Prime Minister,” he said.

On the Emergency and its ordinances (EO), the former Prime Minister said that any proposed legislation must be debated at the Parliament before being presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“According to the constitutional amendment made in the past, if the Agong rejects it, it has to be brought back to the Parliament for further deliberation.

“The Bill only becomes a law automatically if the Agong doesn’t give royal assent after two months of being presented to His Majesty,” Mahathir stated.

Shameless Perikatan

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim

He also decried the Government’s decision to disallow MPs from going into the Parliament, adding it was making a mockery of the nation’s democratic institution.

“We are no criminals. I hope the people will rise up and it is unfortunate that we have such a Government leading us,” he added.

Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim alleged that the Perikatan Government has actually fallen, as many of its own MPs were opposed to it now.

“But the issue now is the Government has turned its back on the Parliament, Agong and the people. That’s why we are assembled here today.

The crowd

“Never have we seen a Government break our country’s laws in such a brazen way,” the former deputy prime minister said.

Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng added: “The Government said they adjourned the sitting today due to COVID-19 scare.

“I’m also afraid of the disease but I’m worried about the plight of those who lost family members to COVID-19, those who were stripped off their livelihoods and our children’s future. Mahiaddin must go!”

The group later marched for a while and dispersed at 10.45am, with no untoward incident reported.

However, FocusM noted that participants did not maintain social distancing during the peaceful assembly. – Aug 8, 2021.
