KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin should lodge a police report over alleged attempts to get him to intervene in court affairs to acquit several individuals who are being prosecuted for criminal offences.

Transparency International Malaysia president Dr Muhammad Mohan described the matter as a serious issue involving the judiciary.

"The prime minister should lodge a police report since the matter is a serious issue since it involves people (urging him) to interfere with the judiciary," he told Berita Harian today.

Muhammad added that he was shocked by such a revelation by the prime minister and the actions of certain quarters, who have the audacity to urge top leaders in the country to interfere with court affairs.

He described such a culture among political leaders as "too much", since the judiciary should be fair and independent in making its decisions, without any political interference.

"All this while, we thought such a situation did not exist. Now we know it does exist and it shows that some people have a bad mentality. We are disappointed with the actions of such irresponsible quarters. Such a culture must be stopped," he said.

Muhammad was asked to comment on the statement made by Muhyiddin during his special address earlier today, in which he had said there were quarters less than happy with his insistence on not entertaining their demands.

This, the prime minister said, included urging him to intervene in court affairs to acquit several individuals who are being prosecuted for criminal offenses.

Muhammad applauded the stance taken by the prime minister, for not bowing down to the demands and pressures of such irresponsible quarters.
