IN AN interview with Utusan Malaysia recently, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad again blamed PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan Government in February 2020.

“If not because of Anwar, I would still be prime minister. After I resigned, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong called all 220 MPs to write down their choice for prime minister.

“I thought Pakatan Harapan would choose me because I was with them but Anwar said he had a lot of support.

“Pakatan gave Anwar 92 votes while I had 62. The 62 votes did not come from the coalition but from others. I don’t know who.

“If I received those 92 votes, I would have 154, and I would be prime minister. Anwar made me lose and he lost as well,” the Langkawi MP was reported as saying.

However, netizens were amused by Mahathir’s attempt to rewrite the narrative that caused Pakatan’s collapse and took to social media to mock him.

Leading the barrage of ridicule was former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

(At first, it was my fault. Then, it was Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s fault and now it is Anwar’s doing. Tomorrow, it will some cat’s fault. Anwar must be such a bad person for collapsing Pakatan)

Echoing Najib’s sentiment, user Mohammad Ridzwan said:

(Everyone knows it was Atok who sought an audience with the Agong and collapsed Pakatan. First time in history someone collapsed his own Government or am I the one becoming senile?)

Netizen Mohd Faizullizam Zamani jested:

(Lately, this cursed old man is doing great comedy. It makes me feel entertained)

It is to note that at the height of the political crisis in February 2020, Pakatan’s administration had decided to give Mahathir free-hand to run the country despite the latter promising the relinquish his post for Anwar within two years during the 14th General Election.

However, his own party Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), later pressured Mahathir to take the party out of the coalition, which he rejected.

Upset by it, Mahathir tendered his resignation to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. However, the monarch himself had advised the nonagenarian not to quit but the latter insisted on it.

With that, Anwar made his move to get as many MPs support to become prime minister, which surprisingly, triggered Mahathir again to make his bid for the post.

And it is to note that in March 2020, following Muhyiddin’s appointment as prime minister, Mahathir himself admitted that the Agong has refused to grant him audience when he made another bid to become prime minister.

On that note, user Ishak Abdullah lamented that despite his advanced age, Mahathir was still filled with vengeance and kept blaming others for his own follies.
