“Sit down and keep quiet,” Nur Jazlan tells Nazir

JOHOR UMNO deputy chief Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said that Tan Sri Nazir Razak should leave the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) alone.

This is after the prominent banker, who is the younger brother of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, said that he would introduce a “shoot to kill” anti-graft policy if he were in power.

“He (Nazir) should sit down and keep quiet because he is the individual who was given the opportunity to become a corporate figure under the Barisan Nasional (BN) government which was rejected by the people in 2018,” Nur Jazlan, who is a former Public Accounts Committee chairperson, told Malaysiakini.

“He was also embroiled in the 1MDB case but he was not charged by the Pakatan Harapan or Perikatan Nasional government. Just let the MACC carry out its duties without any interruption.”

In response to a hypothetical question at an event last Friday (June 3), Nazir said that there are two things that he would carry out immediately to address the country’s systemic problems, including corruption.

The banker pointed to a method introduced by Hong Kong back in the 1970s to address rampant corruption in the port city then, where its government offered amnesty to offences pre-1977 but adopted a strong approach against future violations.

“The second thing I would want to address is corruption, how to break corruption (in this country). There is a model in Hong Kong in the 1970s. They overhauled the system, offered amnesty, and shoot to kill,” he remarked at a talk session to introduce his book ‘Di Sebalik Nama’ during the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2022 at the KL World Trade Centre.

“When there are so many people involved (in corruption), you must have some amnesty. If not, everyone will block (your effort to clean up the system).

“(If you do corruption) in the future, we will shoot to kill (policy). If what they did in the past is nothing serious, we forgive.”

According to him, amnesty for past crimes might be possible if they were “nothing serious”. – June 6, 2022
